Starting issue / transmission problem ??

Hi there

Can anyone shed any light on this please? I have intermittent starting issues as per the attached video. I have just had a new battery (registered) and the garage thought it was was engine speed sensor so also had that replaced. No joy.

Sometimes it will start, sometimes it will start and then splutter and stop, and sometimes it will just crank and crank and crank until the transmission red cog lights up.

The other issue I have is that the transmission is generally always locked in park on a cold so I have to lift the safety release under the gear selector every morning, although it’s generally ok after a run for the rest of the day.

The garage is stumped and told me to take it to BMW, even though they are a German car specialist and Bosch service centre so should have decent kit etc. I am loathed to take it to the dealership as it’s so costly, so before I do I thought I’d see if anyone has had this issue!

*sorry just trying to figure out how to attach the video!

If anyone is reading this and has the same symptoms try disconnecting your IBS cable. If it starts fine after that then you need a new IBS sensor. I’ve got one ordered and will leave the cable disconnected for the time being!

UPDATE - is wasn’t the IBS sensor - that must just have been a coincidence. Just took the plugs out of the ECU and although I haven’t cleaned them up yet I’m sure this must be the problem as some of the points are quite badly corroded.
