Remember that Scooby I was pottering about in the other week when I was doing my M50 conversion ?

This morning, my mates had it on the rolling road, and apparently pulling 248hp :jaw-dropping

As far as we were aware, the only things it's had done is a stupidly large exhaust, and de-cat.

Is it possible for an engine that should roughly have 210hp out of factory, to gain 40hp by a large exhaust and de-cat ?
Do you think that more has been done to it that we don't know about ?

Oh, and this things done 146,000miles... Even the rolling road chap was quite surprised at such a high output for an engine with this many miles :)

I don't want to sign upto a Scooby forum just for one question, so thought i'd see if anyone on here knows.

Thanks,
Ferret !

A decat can make a hell of a difference to a turbo as the cat is usually right next to it and blocks the free flow of air! Before remap with only a decat, my 320d was pulling 176BHP instead of 150BHP :)

:jaw-dropping

Really, such a difference ?
I knew they were restrictive, but didn't think they were that restrictive !

Them cats are coming off mine as soon as my mate gets his welder out :D

Thing is, with a petrol you need it for MOT, on the Derv it has TWO cats!!!! so remove the v hot one right next to the turbo and leave the mid cat in place and the particlates still get filtered. My 320d runs with no smoke whatsoever, even with remap :D

Seen the rolling road print outs... 190WHP :thumbsup

The car has an intermittent misfire too - The point of the RR (specialist in Scoobys) was for a diagnosis as any other reader we had didn't come up with any faults.

The faults came back with Lambda, AFM and Knock sensor.

We unplugged the AFM a week ago or so to see if the car ran better, as it turns out it doesn't run at all. So we think thats why it came up.
He's gonna change the O2 sensor next (£180 genuine :jaw-dropping).

What concerns me, is the knock sensor - There's gotta be a reason for the sensor to get flagged up. Or will the misfire from a faulty O2 sensor cause it ? I wouldn't have thought so.
My mate said, that the RR person wasn't concerned about the knock sensor being flagged up, and something to do with the Clifford alarm and the way the car starts :confused
My mates not as mechanically minded as me, so didn't pay too much attention to what he was saying.

Wish i'd been there to hear what he said !

I take it the up pipe to the turbo was done aswell, I got 251bhp out of my old scooby when this was done, makes some difference. Don't worry to much about the Lambda, I would worry about the Knock, this means the fuel is igniting to early, the pistion will be at the wrong position in the bore, this has been know to hole pistions, get it looked at and set up.

@mxjay - I know first hand the damage knock can do - I detonated a piston on my Punto GT (God bless her sole :lol)
Unfortunately, my mate seems to believe this RR "expert" when he said "don't worry about it"... I could scream until i'm blue in the face that the knock sensor being flagged up is bad, he won't listen !

@Amos - Turbo 2000 RR'd at 248bhp.... RR graphs to prove :jaw-dropping !

On a side note:

My Biggest advantage is the Scoobaru uses a very heavy AWD system ! Mines a lightweight RWD :lol

I was asking because if your friends car was a WRX then it had gained about 3bhp....lol.

I also have a friend who has bought a UK Spec turbo 2000 and has done numerous post offices over to get the money to tune it and to be fair what he has basically done is turn it into an STi and then tune from there. He runs just shy of 400 but he finds that its very unreliable......complete friday car. Not the engine, just the drive train mainly.

This thing is far from an STi (as I believe, the STi has a red inlet manifold (?) for a start !)

This thing was as basic comes (as far as we were concerned, bar the de-cat/exhaust), and now this RR that 'specializes' in Scoob's, is saying it's putting out 248bhp, and even they're shocked !

I just wish I had been there !

Well, seems like your friend has a car thats very responsive to tuning.

Tell him to tune it more.

Is he completely sure previous owners havnt re-mapped it?

No.

Long story short, I know more 'history' on this car than he does - And as far as i'm aware, it's never had anything done bar the exhaust !

Tell him to tune it more.
He has every intention of doing just that ! But at just over £500 for a remap for the Scoob, he's not too sure what to do ! I think that question is best off asked on the Scooby forums !
Plus, I can piss him off by saying that a remap for mine is in the lower £200 region :D

This Scoob will never beat me ! :lol

Strap a GT30 turbo to your unit and he'll be in your dust...........:thumbsup
As much as i'd like to do that..... I've only got a 328i with an M50 conversion !

I'd like to remap it early next year if possible !
It will be de-catted this year !

And I say again:
That Scoob will never beat me

Thats the thing with those scoobys, they could be a boggo standard Turbo 2000 (plus end can) with STi kit and it looks like it should have 280bhp.......but then it could be the real deal and have 280bhp. Either way......doesnt matter.......rear view mirror getting smaller.

Im not doubting your quest to stay with that scooby.........but if he is planning further power hikes........so must you. Thing is.......he should also consider the brakes being uprated.

Have you considered upgrading yours?

So I must.... But, he's struggling unless he goes the megasquirt route !

Don't be silly - He hasn't considered any brake upgrades.

As for mine, until power starts hitting 280bhp+ i'm not touching mine - They don't need it !

Good, glad your not doubting it :lol :thumbsup !

Fair enough........if i was you, from experience, i think you'd be perfectly adequately happy with M3 brakes. I run TAROX for track days with greenstuff pads and cheaper drilled and grooved disks for everyday. They stop like a treat even after 20 mins of abuse. Great brake fluid inside and all is good for 341.2bhp.

Bed time now. Speak later.
