Hi

I got out of my car this evening with the engine running and could hear a washing machine-like thump about once a second.. maybe a bit like the wipers are on, without them actually being on... My gf reckons the car has been making the noise for some time..

After sticking my head under the bonnet I reckon it's coming from the offside flank of the motor.. somewhere down toward the gearbox..

I can't feel anything vibrating in sync and the noise does not increase in speed with revs (or not noticeably.. by the time the revs have climbed you can't hear it anymore)..

Nobody has any idea what this might be?

After digging around further I found a discussion where something similar was diagnosed as a lower cam chain tensioner - would this make sense?
