I took my car into the garage because I'd noticed a mechanical whine noise getting louder over the last 6 months, turns out they think it's the rear diff. They advised that I trade the car in as a diff from BMW is £1300 plus labour to fit.

Has anyone else experienced this? Not really sure what to do, the car is only worth about £4k!

BMW diffs aren't infallible. If you can find a good transmission specialist they may be willing to rebuild your diff for a lot less than £1300.

P.S. you could try changing the fluid. BMW have this crazy idea that diff fluid is 'lifetime fill' (whatever that means). So it's likely you're still on the factory fluid.

What sort of mileage are you up to?

Changing the diff oil would be a good start ....shouldnt cost more than an hours labour and £20 in oil.

Ok thanks for this, I've also found a couple of re-conditioned ones on eBay for around the £600 mark with warranty.

I'll mention the fluid change to the garage, surprised they didn't suggest that really.

The problem is now sorted, the diff was goosed so I purchased a reconditioned one with a warranty from eBay and the car is now silent!

That's good news. Be sure and change the fluid every 30k to keep it sweet. That and don't dump the clutch :)
