The lights on my 03 530i go brighter when the engine is revved, I was wondering if this is normal or am I looking at a alternator fault?

Yes, usually a sign of an impending alternator problem, and/ot battery failure, at least, get them both checked out.

My money's on the voltage regulator - had same symptoms on my 996 when it gave out. Worse when engine hot as well.

Buy a cheapy LCD cigarette lighter voltage monitor few quid on ebay - that way you can see if the voltage is messing about when the engine's running.

Having talked about those Jebsens car voltage meter display things, I found them and ordered some for my cars and other daughters, ordered Friday, came Saturday.
As it seems the one I 'lent' out, won't be heading back :) Too useful see!
