Ok just fitted my hydraulic hanbrake on my e36 325i 1994.


Thought i would do a how to guide for anybody thinking of fitting one.

So here it goes my 1st how to guide

Ok 1st things 1st is a list of every thing you will need to fit this.

Main thing is your hydro handbrake, i got mine 75 quid from ebay including the 0.625 master clyinder. Its from OBP brakes


Next some copper brake pipe, paid £5 quid for this from local motor factors


you will also need a brake flaring tool, i borrowed this from my uncle, but u can buy handheld ones on ebay for about £20.


And a pipe cutting tool, B&Q for one and it cost me £5
you will also need some male ends and 2 female joiners to connect the brake line local motor factors cost couple of pence. You will also need a 7/16 and a 3/8 male ends for the master clyinder on back of your hyrdo got them from ebay £3 for 10. (no pics)

Ok so 1st thing 1st is to mount your handbrake to the car do this 1st so you know how long your brake lines will need to be.

U will need to remove centre console along with gear surround and obc as the plastic will be in the way of the handbrake.

Mount the handbrake angled towards you so your not putting any undue stress on the leaver as you pull it.

Its up to each person how they mount the handbrake. but ill show a few pics of how mines mounted.

I used some 2 inch steel and drilled a couple of holes and bolted the handbrake to the my steel bracket, i put one at front and one at the back


next was to drill some holes in the transmisson tunnel.


Then bolt your handbrake in place


So thats it fitted.

Now comes to pluming it into your brake system.

Jack car up so you have plenty off room to work, and then locate your brake line that runs to back brakes. Mine had all ready been changed to copper, but yours should be steel. if your lieing under car its the smallest one to your left. If unsure just follow it back and it will T piece of by your petrol tank.


so u will need to cut into that line with your pipe cutting tool. Make sure to cut between the orginal pipe holders so it wont fail mot for not being supported.

Then drill some holes in the transmission tunnel so you can feed the brake pipe from your hydro down to the line you have cut. use some string to measure from the master clyinder on the hydro to the cut line.
Then cut a lenght of copper pipe to match.


Slide your male brake end onto the copper pipe and then do a single flare on the end with your flaring tool.


you will end up with a little bulb on the end so the brake end cant slide back off


Do the same on the other end of the pipe and use a 7/16 male end on that one.


Do the same with another lenght of pipe and put a male on one end to connect to your brake line and a 3/8 male end on the other end to connect to your master clyinder.

Then screw in the ends to the hydro master clyinder and tighten them up, brake spanner is needed so everything is tight.

Then feed your lines down from the master cylinder through your drilled holes and down to your cut brake line.

then back under the car, and put a male brake end on each end of your cut into brake line and then flare them so they dont come back off,

Use a female joiner to join the pipe coming from the back port of your hydro master cylinder to the line running from the front of the car, and then do the same with the other line coming from the front port on the master clyinder and join that to the line goin to back off car.


What pipe should look like from in the car


Finaly handbrake installed.

You will then need to bleed it, just open a bleed nipple on the back push foot brake down the pull handbrake tighten nipple, just repeat till no air comes out and then repeat on other side.

Heres a picture from inside the car, i will try modify the centre console around the handbrake but at the moment im not to bothered, just used some cable ties for the switchs and my obc.

looks good mate on a scale of one to ten how hard would you say it is as im thinking about doing it my self

I would say once you have all the bits u need it would be a 3 out of 10, its pretty easy, and i never touched brakes before.

Just take your time and it will go fine

Lol didn't no a mod had to check my post before it was posted.

Benifits For me Are For drifting mate, locks wheels up much better, doesn't stay on so once you let go it just release's.

Rather than clutch kicking and swinging out of the steering wheel to start a drift, just pull the Hydro and it kicks out much easyier.

I may be a real noob but what's it for... Is it intended as a replacement for the original handbrake or stunt/race driving?

Nice one mate. but doesn't this mean that the brake pedal doesn't control the rear brakes anymore? just the hydro handbrake does?
