Hi all,

I have a 316ti 1.8 53 plate.

I have an error code P0402 on my obd2 reader stating that the cat is below threshold.

I was told by the previous owner the cat was recently changed, it looks newish anyway so I thought I would change the post lambda sensor, reset the codes but it has come back on.

Does anyone have any idea how may cats my car has?

I have seen some online with 2 cats on the manifold then one on the underfloor pipes but then others without the cats on the manifold.

I am not that mechanically minded and find it hard to get time to get under the bonnet myself.

Trying my hardest to not throw loads of money at.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks for your reply, was very helpful. I just added my vin number and it gave me a full breakdown of my car.

Bad news is it means I do have 2 cats and I'm guessing bank 1 means it's the manifold cat, the underfloor one has been changed as well so I doubt it's that one.

How hard would it be to swap one myself do you think?

The car's not burning lots of oil is it? I think this can cause CAT efficiency codes to be flagged, and can be resolved if the oil burning is rectified - the cats clean themselves up over time and work efficiently enough again.
