Help!

I was unfortunate enough to be queuing in traffic last night when the local river burst its banks. The road quickly turned to a torrent and a number of us were forced to drive though it. The water level was roughly up to the bottom of my bonnet.

I got most of the way through when the car came to a spluttering stop. Managed to get pushed and then towed to safety.

When I tried to start the car this morning it sounded like a tractor and made some horrific noises. Not all cylinders are firing and the car kicks out a lovely plume of white smoke when I increase the revs. But it does start and will tick over.

A couple of questions:

Will leaving the engine running:
a. Do any damage?
b. Help to return the car to normal?

I had a quick look inside the air intake box and it seemed dry.

Sounds like you have some soggy injectors. I'd do a tour of the connectors, split them, a blast of contact cleaner and reassemble. Same for thermostat connectors and any other sensors you can find. Get the diags on to look for any obvious faults so you know where to focus your efforts.
