Hi

When I had to get a recent emergency replacement of an alternator which failed on me, I discussed with the mechanic that my heaters/blowers were blowing inconsistently from time to time. I was aware of the common issue with the Final Stage Resistor and asked if it was worth getting it replaced or just leave it until it goes. He advised me to get it replaced pronto as it has been known to drain batteries when it fails or end up stuck on full blast.

So last week I popped into my local specialist to get the FSR replaced. Straight forward enough. Got the car back, tested it, all fine. The next day, literally 2 hrs of use later I realised I was getting no air being blown into the cabin at all and the demister wouldn't work either. I assumed the new FSR had failed and i was now suffering the problems I was proactively trying to avoid in the first place.

I took it back to the garage who had performed the change of the FSR. He said the new parts normally don't fail and he confirmed this with BMW. Instead of trying another FSR he's done a error code check and informs me the AUC sensor has failed.

Sounds too unlikely to be true to me! Would an AUC failure cause blowers to halt??? Is he just avoiding having to open up the console and replace the FSR again?

I'm getting pretty frustrated at the lack of reliability in a 50k miles E46! :mad

Would buying a basic OBD11 code reader show me these sorts of codes so I can validate these claims in the future?

Thanks for that...I'll proceed to get it changed. What about my code reader question. Would a standard code reader be detailed enough to report errors on this sort of thing or do I need an advanced one to see BMW specific errors...was considering this one... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/U380-OBD-2-II...14&_trkparms=72:1689|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318

or maybe just a usb lead that will allow me to use various shareware applications from my lappy (but I don't want to create more problems for myself by biting off more than i can chew!)

Although that price is tempting, it is not BMW specific. It will read the usual codes as per OBC standards, but BMW also have their own codes. May I suggest something like THIS? It may be pricey, but you will see the benfits in the long run :thumbsup

I'm finding hard to get the part and although I've just found one at MotorMec, they advised me they have never supplied one...implying they just don't fail! I'm very suspicious that I may be being led on a wild goose chase.

Recirculation still opening flaps

Strangely, if I leave it in Auto Recirculate mode I can still hear the recirculation flaps opening and closing periodically. Why would that still occur if the sensor was broke???:confused

Drove over a pothole on Saturday morning and my blowers jumped into life!!! Go figure! They've not stopped yet, so going to carry on regardless and try to persuede the mechanic he needs to check the connections to the FSR he fitted.

Just need to avoid further potholes!

I've heard the fan plug can get a bad connection also
