Hi all

I'm new to BMW ownership and have a 2018 X1 Xdrive with the 8 speed auto box that has quickly started developing problems.

Unfortunately BMW want £8k for a replacement box so am hoping to find advice on garages that could repair the gearbox.

there is no filler level, you need to drain the box and get an approx measurement of what you have drained, you won't be able to drain the full amount as a good bit is left in the torque convertor, refill with fresh fluid matching your measurement, do this at least 3 times to water down the used amount that is left, running the engine and putting into all gears for a few seconds each refill, this will mix old with new, to refill remove the sensor from the top of the gearbox and fill there, when refilling final time an operating temp of 40 to 45 degrees is required, with the engine running remove the small center drain plug, if fluid comes out leave until it stops running, if nothing comes out add a liter to the gearbox [ engine off ! ] and try again, once done reset the gearbox control and reset GB learning.
hope that helps and you get good results......B

Depending on where you are, you might end up doing it yet🤣😍 Seriously though I'm immensely grateful for your assistance.

On another note and after extensive research I have found a company that can offer to test diagnose strip, test and offer repairs on the mechatronic unit. This is re assuring if I cannot rectify by means of oil change.
Dave
the solenoids seem to be the issue and these can be bought from a couple of places in the UK and many more in Europe

BMW have covered themselves in so much as most trouble will usualy start out of warranty or gets passed onto aftermarket warranties or some poor sod with no warranty, as for oil changes, these days they bank on synthetic oil protecting the engine but in reality engines have become so much more complex with much finer tolerances that the oil takes a beating and won't last for extended mileages, i remember when Mobil 1 came on the market, it was the first fully synthetic oil available to the public and it wasn't cheap at about 25 pounds for a gallon, the dealers were still using mineral, i used it for a first 500 mile oil change on my brand new Ford XR3 and would use it for 20000 mile service intervals after with the old oil looking as good as new, but that was the old 1.6 CVH engine which is not even on the same planet as the BMW B47 engines, anyway i got almost 300,000 out of the CVH without any issues or wear and you can still do these mileages on modern engines, but you need to do 8 to 10,000 mile services or once a year. my X2 get new oil and filter every 4500, which is all i do a year now and even with low mileage i still got a gearbox issues, sorted with a fluid change ! it's not rocket science but BMW and others dont care, its acceptable losses:mad:

Hope you are right but the first code was ,,,,Gear ratio monitoring gear 7 : Clutch C2 or C3 open incorrectly . That was yday wile 50 miles from home . Ive manage to drive safe home only issue
was a rough shift around 20 to 30mph ( big jolt ) , In the morning ive taken the car and head to a garage to investigate the problem and the issue went ballistic , After 3 miles i had no reverse ( position on odometer and on shift in R ) car rev but not move and then limp mode the remaining 2 miles to the garage in max 20mph at 2.5k rpm ( wont change any more up gears just rev ).
Had the guy reset the gearbox and clear some codes and have the reverse back but still a joyride . I plan in the morning to see the fluid lvl and quality .
Ill update from there .

Look what i found out guys VW Transmission Lawsuit Won't Be Dismissed
.... this its the same gearbox !!!
We need to get together !!!!
here is a list cars this transmission is in, serious problems are not common hence why most get the cold shoulder from BMW, sad but thats the way most manufacturers work, i maintain most issues are related to servicing or lack of, this needs to be addressed and added to service schedules, IMO of course ;)

Update to post . Did the flush and fluid change was low and dirty but NOT HELPING . Car its drivable atm all gears working but i can feel something isnt right . Rough changes at low speed
im sure will go any moment back to limp mode .
So any who have this issues CHANGING FUIDS ITS NOT HELPING only leave you 400 short . Im still looking for a place to repair and sell the car ( with warranty that issues are gone ) or to change the
gearbox with remanufactured one found for 2500 inc labour .
Only problem i have to get the car to Essex ( 500 miles ) .

Update: had my gear box swapped out today, managed to find a used one with 50k miles on and a replacement torque converter and car drives like new, £3300 all in for the components, labour and oil, but...... now got an error code with the 'oxygen sensor after catalytic converter, signal: short circuit to B+' - maybe been dislodged/moved from the swap out? Part looks relatively inexpensive.

@brucefraser12011962 - any idea where that probe is located, is it on the exhaust manifold?
