Hi, I really hope someone can help with this, I've searched high and low but I just can't find anyone on forums that has suffered a similar issue. I have the auto box with steptronic and it's just developed a very worrying problem. When driving in auto mode it's started developing a mind of its own; when it's operating normally with D showing on the display it seems pretty normal but it randomly switches to manual mode (displaying Mx (x being 1-6) on the display), it always changes back to D eventually and sometimes changes gear itself whilst displaying Mx, as though it is in D mode. Occasionally it will change right down to M1, even when doing 50+ MPH! Interestingly, I noticed that at one point when I was completely stationary (parked up outside the house), the display changed from D to M1, then went up to M2 and M3 but the engine revs stayed at normal tickover, so it was displaying gears that it wasn't in, I think! It's not throwing up any lights on the dash or going into limp home mode.
When it first happened, it started changing gears randomly, right down to 1st (at speed!) but I had no control with the paddles or the stick in DS mode. Since then I can usually change gears with the paddle but it still randomly changes gears, they're all over the place at times. My local garage seem convinced that it needs a gearbox flush and oil change and that that will 'fix' it but I can't find anything online to support that. The gear changes themselves are still smooth, there's no clunking and it's still fast/powerful.
I've read about the wire damage issue in the shifter (when switching between D and DS mode) and I've removed the gaiter and had a look but the wires look perfect so I don't think that's the issue here, plus my symptoms don't seem to be the same as everyone else who've had to do that fix.
My local garage don't seem to want to touch the gearbox and they haven't got this flushing machine that they're suggesting that it needs. I can't find anyone locally who offers that service either.
The only code showing after a diagnostic check at my local indy was:
5087 (egs hardware inputs one touch function)

Can anyone please help? I'm really stumped with what to do here, I don't want to have to take it into BMW, they're just likely to say it needs a new gearbox or something and charge x-thousands of pounds!

It's done 81000 miles and presumably never had a transmission oil change (sealed for life apparently, according to BMW) hmm.

Oh, another thing I forgot to mention: When I change over to DS it will do the same thing and then eventually change back to D mode (on the display) while the shifter is still across in DS position. The same issues then continue.

do not let a normal garage do anything,,its a zf box and the procedure for service etc is quite technical,,your prob could be clutch pack wear it has 5 clutches A-E...also could be the solenoids/mech sleeves and seals or even torque converters but i doubt its the last one,,anyway try and get it to a specialist,,may must require a service etc,,,if not then a rebuild which is £2k+,,aaron court from notttingham is very good,,where are you based ?or bwchiptune in essex

Where are the solenoids and how many are there? I do very much know my way around mechanics but I have literally no experience with auto boxes and I know they're extremely complicated!

Is there any history around the steering wheel? Has it ever been removed? Are the paddles factory or retrofit? I doubt there is anything wrong with the box but more the control system of the box, Do you know anyone with ncs-expert who can code out the paddles temporarily to isolate the paddle wiring?

It's never been removed, at least not in the 2-3 years that I've had the car.It does feel like an electronic control issue to me too. I might suspect the paddles myself but I don't think it would explain why it would change to D mode whilst the stick is across in DS.

I spoke to an auto gearbox specialist today, he was really helpful and seemed very knowledgeable. He said it's definitely not a gearbox fault which was music to my ears to be honest. He said that if it was a fault with the gearbox itself, it would definitely have come up with a dash fault. Also the fact that it is shifting smoothly and is perfect when it's not misbehaving means that it can't be a fault in the box. He is certain that it's electrical (as someone mentioned above and what I suspected myself to be honest), he thinks it will be the shifter itself. I've had a look on ebay and there are quite a few available with the same part number, cheap as chips. I'm going to get one and fit it to see if he's right, for the money it's a no-brainer. The piece of info that really made him certain was when I told him that whilst stationary, the display changed from D to M1-M2-M3 with the revs still at tickover. My question now, if you can help, is this: Are all the autos steptronic and if so, are all the shifter mechanisms the same? My shifter part number is 756248402. I just want to make sure that if I buy that shifter part number it will be suitable for my steptronic system. Thanks in advance...
