Hello,
I have a 2003 E60 530i automatic, had the car 7 years and love it to bits. It has 244,000 miles on clock. Had regular gearbox oil changes at BMW.
For the past year the transmission cog has been popping up intermittently, very infrequently at first. I have replaced the battery, had it registered, replaced alternator and also had a faulty IBS cable replaced. Every time I think the fault is cured, as the gearbox and car drive so well, the cog pops back on again. It disappears once I restart the car.
One fault code that came up was 5088, this indicated the gearshift unit or my worst fear the mechatronic unit. I went ahead and got the gearshift unit replaced, the cheaper option of the 2 and the fault was still present. After a lot of debating and looking for a new E60 I decided I cannot part with my car and I would get the gearbox looked at by an auto transmission specialist. The gearbox specialist had the car for nearly a week trying to find the problem and eventually the gearbox was given a clean bill of health, no mechatronic fault, or other fault within the gearbox. They found lots of old stored fault codes, cleared them and started over, same fault code 5088 switch L1 to L4 shows up.
The car still drives beautifully, loads of torque, does everything it should, just never know when the red cog will reappear.
The gearbox specialist suspects an electrical fault and doesn't think it's coming from my ECU.
Has anyone ever experienced anything like this and if so did you get to the bottom of it?
My next step is to have the gearshift unit checked, just in case it is a faulty part (had that before with a BMW airbag seat map sensor). My independent BMW specialist is looking at wiring diagrams to see what he can do.
Does anyone know of a good auto electrician in the Hampshire area? Any help or ideas would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. I am in Southampton, have you had anything similar to this problem before?

Just to update, I did get the problem solved. It is hard to explain as the mechanic who fixed my gearbox was Polish so we had a slight language barrier but he is an excellent mechanic. He opened up my gearbox and found a sliding switch inside was broken, I do not know what this part is called or where exactly in the gearbox it was located, I believe it was a part that linked up to the gear selector lever. It would have cost around £1,000.00 to buy this part so I purchased a second hand gearbox from ebay, took a bit of a chance and it was a hard gearbox to find for a 3 litre petrol, if getting a donar gearbox you need to make sure you get the exact same box as your car, so check the part numbers carefully. The mechanic then changed this switch part with the used part, also needed a full gearbox oil change. The car drove perfectly after this.
I would advise that if you have ruled out the mechatronics unit and the gear selector then find someone capable of opening the gearbox up & checking inside.

Highmiler - thanks for posting I have the exact same problem with my 2004 545i and the same 5008 code.

Previously I've replaced the transmission sump and oil (ZF parts and fluid) and I've also replaced the full bank of solenoids.

The car shifts fine until it reaches normal operating temperature and then the transmission fault kicks in sending into limp mode. Once the error is cleared with INPA it'll be fine for a while and then repeat.

I was going to head down the route of replacing the gear selector but thought I'd disassemble the gear selector first, I also managed to get a used gear selector assembly from ebay for £38 delivered. I tested all wires for continuity and found no issue but replaced a section of the wiring. I also accessed the gear selector printed boards and the selector mechanism. I cleaned it, including the selector 'tabs' than move against the PCB and then applied dielectric lubricant. Put it all back together yesterday (16/11/17) and eventually the 5008 returned.

I was very interested to read your post. Please can you explain one point you make? Did the mechanic that fixed the problem replace something underneath the vehicle or was he working only in the cabin? As you have replaced your gear selector unit and still had the code I'm thinking this isn't the source of the issue (same with my findings). Is there anyway you could find out what he replaced or do you have his number still? (I'm in Dorset). I've got a hunch that the culprit could be the 'Automatic Transmission Range Switch' that resides under the vehicle next to transmission. Any help you can offer is very much appreciated. Cheers.
