Hi Guys

I need some advice, my bmw 2003 convertible manual 318ci has been sat for over a year since it started mixing the engine oil into the coolant and smoking from the exhaust, yet there isnt any over heating on the temp gauge and also the engine oil is clear with no mayo etc. Ive had it checked from a decent local garage , first mechanic checked it , he couldnt tell if there was anything wrong with the headgasket or oil cooler, today another specialist came into the garage and checked my car, they tested the head gasket and also pressure tested the oil cooler, they told me that the headgasket is fine which i have clarified again and they confirmed the HG is fine, also the oil cooler didnt show any signs of damage or leak but they have noticed some engine oil around the oil cooler. They have said both Headgasket and oil cooler didnt show any signs of damage etc but they assume it could be the Oil cooler, i also had my hunch before the tests that it is the oil cooler , now what do you guys think? shall i pay and get the coolant changed, all coolant pipes cleaned, brand new oil cooler installed, brand new engine oil and oil filter also changed as the headgasket is fine and that was my biggest fear. Or could anyone tell me if it could be anything else (some other way engine oil is reaching the coolant and expansion tank).

advice will be greatly appreciated.

I would go with the oil cooler first.
Not a petrol person but from previous posts is what brings me to that conclusion but the petrol people will be along soon.

Hi the N42/46 engine is well known for not being BMW,s finest hour but head gasket failure is not one of its faults, the only other external connection between the coolant & oil system is the heat exchanger easy to change cheap on ebay,i would change this first fit new profile gaskets.

Hi Guys

thankyou for your replies, weve decided to clean out the coolant pipes and expansion tanks, replace with brand new oil cooler and a engine oil and filter change along with fresh spark plugs, hopefully this should work god willing and my car will be good as new :)

Hi Guys

Not so good update

So had compression test done back in nov and came back good, so we went with oil cooler change, cleansing of coolant pipes and tank and also service. It ran like a dream for 20 miles but due to me not having insurance and being winter i parked it up. Fast forward to June last month, i turn it over and drove for few miles and noticed blue smoke from exhaust again along with liquidy oil coming from the exhaust when given a rev :( . Theres also some light amount of oil in the coolant but no where near as bad as before. Also there is slight loss and judder of the engine at time but still NO over heating on the temp gauge, no mayo in the engine oil. Can anyone think of what else it could be? :( Someone above said it could be the heat exchanger?

Thanks guys

Well it could, and if it is, that would be a good result. It could also be a cracked cylinder block/ liner, which wouldn't.
