Afternoon everyone,

New to this, so you'll have to bare with me.

First of all, its a 2000 E46 318ci (1.9ltr) 4cyl. Standard, no mods etc.

Did a complete oil change (filter etc) last week and used hydraulic lifter cleaner (tappetts were a little noisy) and all seemed fine. Then another noise caught my attention..

Quite a loud rattling/tapping (kind of like a tractor) from under the bonnett..
Its loud on start-up (cold) but fades when warmed up and idling (but still fairly noticeable)
Is worse when driving and doesnt seem to fade even when the engine is warm etc..

Its not the tappetts because i had a listen then other day and its coming from what i can only assume is something todo with airflow etc.

I dont have a picture, but will explain it the best i can! :)

If your looking at the engine, to the rear right of the block, is a load of black housing.. its coming from further (mid-way) down the block..

Im planning on taking it to a diagnostic place at the weekend, but thought to save time and hassle, id ask all of you knowledgable people too see if anyone had any ideas.

Have flicked through a few posts and nothing seems to fit the description..

Any help you can offer would be fantastic!

I hope to hear from someone soon!

Thanks,

Alex :)

Hey Jim,

That sounds like its in the right area. Had a look on Youtube, and it sounds about right. Ill have a look and try to see if its grubby or loose.

Thanks so much for the help!
