Diesels make much better candidates for remapping if you ask me,
1/ If you take a diesel engine apart, even at ridiculous mileages, wear is likely to be non-exsistant (diesels normally fail due to a failed ancilliary parts, turbo, swirl flaps etc).
2/ The standard power output is likely to be deliberately strangled from the manufacturer, (most diesels have a turbo, not just the high performance versions).
3/ No worry about pinking due to weak mixtures or overboost, in fact the boost does not even need to be turned up as diesels normally run with an excess of air for emissions reasons.
4/ Diesel engines are inherently "strong", with heavy duty components.
The only thing I would do before remapping a high mileage one is check the turbo hasn't got too much free play
