I’ve got an electrical issue that I’m coming to my wits end. Happened last year and still not got it resolved.
E36 3.0 M3. Track prepared but still road legal.
Problem is this
When sidelights and headlights are off the indicators work fine but the nearside (UK) sidelight flashes with the left indicator. The right side flashes normally
When the sidelights or headlights are on, the headlights and sidelights come on as normal but also the NS front, rear and repeater indicator lights come on. Also the indicators on the OS stop working.
Had it in at my local BMW specialist who could not find the problem and gave me the car back
Have changed the 18 button OBC as the previous one stopped working. Looked like something burnt out as melted part of casing and PCB.

Changed the indicator relay. No difference.

Previously had the relay for the immobiliser on the starter motor bypassed as well as a new starter motor which was just before the problem occurred.

Electric windows and central locking do not work either which I think has occurred since the problem with the lights was discovered. Had a fiddle with the headlight switch and drivers side electric window started working again. That one stumped me.

Found broken wires in the group of wires going into the boot lid. Repaired those and still no change.

Thinking it may be the crash sensor relay underneath the dash on the drivers side but any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

I have the wiring diagram for the car and the earth for the side lights and the front indicator are the same number (X165) reference page 328 of wiring diagram

Any help would be appreciated as like I say, it’s driving me mad

To conclude my own thread. Issue was wires melted underneath the passenger seat. These melted when some welding was undertaken on the underside of the car. Unfortunately did not cause a short. In the end a simple fix but was expensive as difficult to find.
