Hi,

I have a 318ti with the M44 1.9 engine, I am looking to tune the engine and get some cams for it

But first of all before I put some cams in I want to make the car safe at high revs, What needs to be upgraded to alloy the car to rev high for exmaple if I put rally cams in they can have a power band upto 7.5k rpm, What would I need to upgrade to alloy my car to rev that high?

I have the same car too!

I find its nippy rather than fast. Pulls nicely to 4k but after that is very linear. Not what I expected from a twincam. My old 16v golf picked up much faster past 4k. Feels more like 8valve power characteristics to me, and I'm told this is normal for this engine.

I've given up trying to rev it, and now have a self imposed 5k limiter.

Love the car though!

The accepted safe limit is 7k RPM. To go beyond that you'll need quite a bit of work. If you were to go down that route, I would advise going for a full on 2.1 build...

sorry to jump back on the wagon here but mine seems bit different!! bit sluggish till 3500 ish then pulls really hard to around 7?? dont know if anything already done tho? its got induction kit and runs bit lumpy low down??? also had big probs trying to get it through emissions test @mot! there is new cat and system on it??

Hi Bob,
my knowlege is very limited here, but as far as i know:

if its been played with in the past and the emissions are dirty i'd pay for a good tune-up from somebody with a good rep.

theres a bmw (and tvr) trained specialist in Chepstow, not too far from you, close to the old severn bridge. i hear he is very good. "Forza West" tel: 01291-624-563.

if its running rich i guess it needs plugging in to read the codes, lambder sensors and all that... i guess you're risking damage to that new cat if the emissions are bad.
