Hi guys

I am new to the forum so hope i make sense.

i recently purchased an 318 IS and the person who sold me the car never told me it had an oil leak. I did not expect one as the car looked well looked after and it was dry. the following day i took the car for an MOt test and we noticed the leak.

i believe oil is coming from underneath the oil filter housing. A mechanic and the dealer has told me this is a common problem and i will need to replace the gasket and o rings.

i have purchased these and just wanted to know if i could do this job at home and which tools i will need. i have noticed the alternator is in the way

Any tips please

Thanks

You will need one of these to remove the cap without damage :thumbsup

You should be able to get a single one from a good motor factors or tool supplier. Take the car with you to ensure you get the correct size.
When you re-install the housing put a small amount of grease on the large rubber O ring. DO NOT over tighten it as the plastic will break. IIRC they should be torqued to 25nm, which is not tight :thumbsup

Sounds like it's leaking from between the oil filter housing and the engine block

See here, #4, 5, 6 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BE72&mospid=47426&btnr=11_1568&hg=11&fg=30

And you will need to remove the alternator, power steering pump and bracket here http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BE72&mospid=47426&btnr=12_0572&hg=12&fg=21 :thumbsup
Well spotted Ronnie. I thought it was just the filter housing O rings :embarrassed
Makes sense now ;)
