I am sure you know that my car was loosing a bit of water and nothing could be found.

I have thrashed it around this morning and then removed the bumper to do some other work. Saw a few drops of water on the floor.

Then noticed water around the cap of the expansion cap, so that has been leaking-is it a case of a new cap, or is there an underlying reason?

Hi Philip, clean the water off and remove the fan cowl. Run the car up to temp and check for a water leak. Caps are very very common, bear in mind that the coolant may be coming out as steam from the cap seal :thumbsup
Its also worth checking the expansion bottle on the side of the rad as these can also expand and leak.
Let me know the results :thumbsup
If it is the cap matey, just get a genuine one from BMW, IIRC they are about £15. The pattern ones are crap, so get genuine :thumbsup
