Im looking to build a e30 trackday car and i want the a good mix of speed and handling and don't know what car to start with. was thinking of ether a 320 or 325? any help would be much appriciated

325i all the way, I wouldn't get a 320i, same weight engine but less power

does it have to be a 30? You'll get a 36 325i for less than an equivalent condition e30.

Not trying to put you off, just curious!

I'm still very strongly considering getting rid of my civic for a 30/36 325i.

i had a bmw e30 320i coupe as a track car and it was great, 2.5 would have been faster but we had good itmes in it all the same!

also had a 320i e36 , great cars.

all new suspention bushes and brakes on both cars. both just as good as each other! and a rarther fetching camo green pain job on the e36!

two things I'd take into consideration (and the first one is an actual qu)

tuning parts (engine and handline) - cheaper on e30 than e36?

also - if you're doing all the work yourself, don't forget that the e30 bolts are likely to be more seized :hihi

e36 325i is faster than the e30 325 better handling and more choice with tuning on the e36 now i think.
plus e36 easy to find a good one.

Best of both worlds. E30 shell with an E36 328i engine.....
That would be an awsome track car....

don't bother with an M20b20 (E30 320i) unless you already have one...
It will have less power than a 325 for the same weight..also will have drum brakes on the rears and smaller size front suspension legs...(unless it's a touring which has Mtech suspension and rear discs)

If you don't want or can't find a decent 325, a 318is (M42 engine) is a reasonable alternative...

The E30 325 has 170bhp and weighs 1250kg
The E36 325 has 190bhp and weighs 1500kg

and as standard the E36 328 is about the same power and weight as the E36 325

So power to weight is better in the E30...it also has a better balance and is easier to tune the suspension as well as being cheaper in parts, generally...
However, a standard E36 has a better suspension set up than the E30...especially the rear.

I have E36 m3 that spends a fair amount of time on tracks (just won national hillclimb championship in improved production 2001-3000cc class in it) and an E30 327i race car, the E30 is faster on tight twisty stuff, the M3 is faster in a straight line...
