So here is my list of mods for my e30 325i: Thoughts appreciated on costs and options please ladies and gent. These prices are approx from various sources:

Rebuild Engine @ £700 labour
Schrick Cam @ £300
Alpina Airflow header @ £700
Stainless downpipes @ £400
K&N induction kit @ £400

Does this sound about right? I am currently sorely tempted to drop 6 cyl M engine in.....

Pending a compression test and a look at the pistons (I am thinking about posting some photos of these to get second opinions before I proceed with anything) I want to get another ~20 hp out of the engine.

At the end of the day its a 138k daily driver (not high daily mileage) so my concerns are that I dont simply bolt a load of high stress ancillaries onto a tired/knackered lump. I would be delighted to get as little done as poss to get the increase I am after, the only reason I am looking into mods at this stage is that I am looking at a new head gasket & clutch in the next 1-2k miles and wanted to take the opportunity get it all done.

The standard m20 is 170bhp and the 24valve is approx 195bhp.
IMO that would be the cheapest way of gaining that power. You can pick up a tatty E36 325 for around 500 quid. :thumbsup

Thats a VERY interesting point. I had considered a swap out at some length but couldn't reach a conclusion. What are the issues around transmission and loom etc?
Ive got a feeling the engine and box bolt straight in, and you can splice the E30 loom into the E36 engine loom. Ill try and dig out some info at the weekend for you mate. Just PM me to remind me. :)
Hopefully one of the other guys will read the thread and give you some more advice with this. A20 RYM is the guy on here regarding engine swaps.
Hope this helps a bit mate :thumbsup

I dont think I will be going quite that far (obviously). I am super keen to keep her looking as close to stock as possible with a couple of M3 bodywork tweaks (front splitter). Definitely interested in the 328i though...

yea well like steve pointed out the engine swap is probably the better option as straight away you will gain 20bhp, the 328i can easily be tuned using the inlet and throttle body conversion, that with a decent pipe, induction and remap you can achieve around 230-240bhp depending on how manyhorses the donor engine has dropped over the years.

mine has got just under 145k on the clock and as far as i can tell has been looked after well, when it was on the road it ran perfect never giving me a problem and pulled very well, its been sat on my drive for a few months(mid way through a project) and it hadnt been started, it started perfect and ran perfect from the getgo so its a good engine, its still in the car and running so all the parts are there and can be inspected, test drive is fine but its highly illegal as it is.
