My compact used to open the boot with the key and the boot would come up automatically. It stopped doing it so i’ve replaced the struts, but it’s still not rising. I’ve noticed the BMW ones are quite a bit thicker than the replacement ones (which I’ve been assured work with my car!) and they have a plastic cover round them. Is there something I need to transfer over onto the new struts? Thanks!

Nope:)

You should have a look at your old struts and reading lifting power.
Than compare lifting to new one if its equal or more lifting power.

I bought a pair of ebay for my vert and they were not as powerful as the BMW ones, in fact the lid came down on my wrist instead of staying up. I ended up going over the local scrappy and getting a couple.

I have just bought some struts for my Compact, Anschler from Carparts4less, they do not seem to be as powerful as the original BMW units (which are spring activated?) and certainly the tailgate does not open on its own, but after lifting it part way then the struts do takeover and fully open it.
