on a 04 525i with a m54 is it possible/ok to change the oil filter without draining/ changing the oil? my oil is only 1500+/- miles old but I used a cheap filter when doing the last change and lately I have noticed a leak coming from around the oil filter housing so I wanted to first start with changing the filter and replacing the gasket inside but can't remember for sure where I read that it was ok to do this and whether or not I still need to drain oil out to do it.

Yes you can, as soon as you break seal the oil will drain away.
I would also recommend using a MANN filter.

Mann filters def best. The o ring on was always taught to stick a bit of oil round the sealing surface of they also. Makes removal next time easier but oil also helps to seal under pressure

Nothing wrong with just changing the filter. Did you replace the O ring when you last did it? However as long as it wasn't brittle or perished it should still not leak. Have you fitted it properly?
