Hi all,

this is my first post on this forum. After a lot of searching I still couldn't find somebody with a similar problem.

I own a carsoft 6.5 package (cables, laptop with com port and software)

I'm able to read some data out of my 318is and I'm able to read ALL the data out of the E39 525 of my Grandfather and of my uncle. Except for the live data, don't know why this doesn't work...

2 Months ago I bought an E36 325i car, automatic gearbox in it.
However I'm not able to read anything out of it. Carsoft does start the reading process and says OK at all subjects (because it can't read errors even though they might be there) but when it reaches airbagg or another subject after a period of time the reading bar is moving very very fast and then the program gets stuck.

The dealer can't read the car aswell, same problem.

I think this has something do to with the K line (or what it's called) used to read out the data ? Does somebody know more about this or got a possible solution for this problem?

Thanks !

Did you ever have your car jump started by any chance? That could be one of the causes for K-Bus error.
It could be that it ever got started by a Jump start.
Does this damage the K-BUS?

I tried reading several times, even with a new battery.

Well, there are safe ways to jump start a BMW without damaging the ECU by a surge when removing the jump leads. Have most of the power consuming equipment turned on which will keep the ECU busy.

But that would mean that my electronical parts like elec windows wouldn't work aswell ? Everything in the car is working, no errors at all.
The only point is that carsoft and the dealer can't read it.

What has your dealer suggested to you?
Nothing yet, a friend of mine works at the dealer and connected the car to the PC and we were not able to read the car. I will go back to that dealer tomorrow and ask them what they can do to fix the problem or what may cause it.

We have had this before a few times.............the ECU is shot.

We end up sending the ECU to a repair specialist to have it looked at and corrected.......last time we had this it was on an E46- cost was £85 to have it inspected and repaired.

How come everything still works fine ? That's strange, you would suspect side effects when something is broken.

Your ECU is coded to your car. Different ECU will not work, even if your car is the same model, so needs reprogramming if it is possible.

Instead of repairing the ECU, is it possible to exchange the complete ECU with one from a E36 325i available on ebay ?

cheaper and easier to get your own unit tested and repaired- that way you dont have to pay a specialist to code the new ECU to your car.

ECU test fee is around £30.......and if it needs repair and you authorise repairs- most places waver the test fee.

Do you have any idea where to do this ? or do I have to ask the dealer for that.

Update: the K-line PIN20 light of the interface is burning red, could it be that this causes the error ? On other BMW cars this one is burning green.

Any idea what may cause this red light ?

I have KWP2000 Software for all cars which can READ & WRITE to all ECU's.
I have a 328i e36 and the only way I can get the software to read my ecu properly is, before starting clicking 'SLOW'.
Basically the siemans ecu's have slow prosessers in them, like computers they can be fast or slow. The E36 is very slow compared to most.
I dont know much about Carsoft but maybe there is a option in the begining like I have??
