When I bought the car the MOT advice note stated slight play was present in the osf suspension.

Whilst cleaning the car over the weekend I discovered this play was more than "slight".

When I put the wheel brace on a nut and push down to undo it the wheel moves back about half an inch or so which is accompanied by a clunk sound.

I'm guessing the lower ball joint has gone or maybe the bushes on the bottom arm.

Is this an easy job to replace?

It's you are experiencing a general clunking from that wheel when driving it's probably the wishbone bush, which means new wishbone. If it's the wishbone rear bush you can test this by jabbing the brakes when in motion, if you receive a thud or clunk through the steering wheel then it's the rear wishbone bush. These serve to keep the control arm / hub assembly in alignment under braking, also known as brake reaction bushes.
