Hi All,

I'm new to this forum so apologies for bursting in with a question. I Have a 1993 BMW 325i Auto which has a dash problem that is driving me crazy! Basically on damp days the instrument cluster (all guages and most warning lights) cut out then come back on again, then off and on etc like you are turning the ignition key on and off whilst driving.

I have done some diagnosis (i'm an automotive engineer) and believe it to be the relay/s that control these systems which I think are behind the glove compartment. However, the rather extensive (complicated) wiring diagram I have does not indicate which of these relays it is! So can someone give me some pointers before I start tearing the dashboard apart?

Many thanks.

P.S. Has anyone had this problem before?

Hello and welcome Welshie22 :). The instrument cluster does not have relays linked to it. It has fuses which are located in the engine bay...F23,F27,F31, and F46. There are four relays behind the glove box...underload, wiper, wiper motor, and starter. So the first port of call is to check to see if there is water ingress in your fuse box.

Ahh ok! Cheers Neal I think you may actually be right, the reason I say this is that i've had some problems sometimes and if I pull the 4 fuses out you mentioned that are related to the instrument cluster and re fit them it fixes the problem temporarily.

I know the fuse box isn't 'soaked' with water, and no other systems on the car have been giving trouble so my next question is "What do I do next to dry the connections or whatever out?"

Thanks

If you do find water in the fuse box, let it dry naturally, or lightly with a hair dryer. Then spray contact cleaner to absorb any moisture left.
