Hello everyone,

Hope all is well.
I have 2012 (62) bmw f10 520d 8 speed automatic.
Mileage is 142k with timing chain and gearbox service done.
Unfortunately when driving this car I hear a rattle noise coming when accelerating, between 1500-1800 rpms. When changing gears, the right side of the engine slightly lifts even though I have changed the engine mounts last week.
Could anyone advise me on what could be the issue, I have been told the engine lifting could be due to bad transmission mount but the rattling have been told it could be the flywheel on its way out 馃槵 .

Thanks,
Irbaaz

You will always get some movement on its mounts when putting engine under load by selecting gear as it鈥檚 rubber mounted.
I would get car up in air and have the under tray off to see if you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Could be several different reasons, exhaust rattle loose bracket, flexi etc as they will have been disturbed doing the chain.
Also I would drop starter off and check flex plate to torque converter bolts are tight and the flex plate is in good condition.

Thanks for your response. The car has been checked by someone I know. They are saying it鈥檚 likely pieces of metal have broken up inside the cat or the flywheel. Exhaust is fine as have checked that myself.
Where is the torque converter found and flex plate?

There鈥檚 no flywheel as such on an auto not like a DMF anyway.
There is just a plate with a ring gear on bolted to crank, the torque converter is then bolted to it once the gearbox goes back in.

Assume you mean cost to replace the flex disk? It鈥檚 either gearbox out or engine out job to do it. However I wouldn鈥檛 be going down that route yet as you don鈥檛 know there鈥檚 anything wrong with it.
If you drop starter off you can check the bolts and have a check of the plate through the starter hole.
I would suggest going to a decent specialist as the person who has looked at it doesn鈥檛 sound like they have much of an idea to me.

Oh that is a big job then.
I have just started the car up, the noise is there, slight rattle. I will attach a video or I can send it to you?

I can hear something over the normal diesel noise but it鈥檚 hard to say what it is from a sound clip.
If it鈥檚 from the rear of the engine I would be taking back to whoever did the chain on it if it was fairly recent. If it鈥檚 only started since then it stands to reason it鈥檚 related to the work somehow.

The timing chain had been done at 139k, the noise has come after 4k miles as now on 143k.

In that case seek out a decent beemer specialist round your way to have a good look at it, still can鈥檛 help thinking something post chain change related.
Hmm maybe it is post chain change related and I will try find a good bmw specialist nearby.
But As I mentioned before, car was driving perfectly for 4k miles, only now has it started making that terrible noise, it鈥檚 just very annoying :/ .

Hello everyone,

Upon further investigation I have realised the noise comes on idle sometimes but when I press the accelerator gently it goes then comes back around 1300/400 rpm . When I drive at 60/70 there is no sound at all, apart from when I come to a stop the car starts vibrating and I feel the vibration is down to the gearbox mount which I鈥檒l be changing tomorrow.
When car is making sound it鈥檚 definitely coming from the right side as when I put my ear near driver side wheel I can hear it properly.
