Hi there i just wanted to mention how BMW cars are supposed to be limited to 155 but i believe it is not always the case.

For example my cuzin was racing a 996 turbo in his stock m3 evo convertible and he exceeded a touch over 155 but backed off as the race was halted by traffic.

just recently my other cuzin took his stock e46 m3 convertible to 160mph with no limiter kicking in at all! if only we had a bit more road left the car would of easily gone beyond the 170 mark.

but what i am tryin to get at is why these cars which is a good thing claimed to be limited?

with no records of de-limiting on both cars at all and the fact that they are totally standard engines makes it a mystery

has anyone had this experience before?

your replies are most welcome:thumbsup

kind regards, bimmerboi:)

In a relatively recent episode of Top Gear, Clarkson took an M5 Touring on to the runway and did about 180-odd if recall correctly. It doesn't appear to be true.

The big 4 Jap bike manufacturers have a "gentleman's agreement" to restrict all their bikes to 186 mph in order to avoid idiotic legislation restricting power.

Sorry, but i have to say that although i'm a fan of motorsport, and like to drive fairly quickly i can't condone racing a porker at 160 with traffic about.

Don't get me wrong i'm no saint but at that kind of speed you're driving on the edge of your ability, and the car's ability but more importantly you have to consider the other road users who are often texting their bird, changing a cd, or manouvering without using mirrors. Don't forget the Volvo drivers too!

Just my opinion tho!

as a fireman who has to pick up the pieces when knobs doing these speeds on public roads get it wrong i thing ive the right to say "what a bunch of fecking anally retentive wankers"

maybe next time im going round the motorway putting markers by bits of brain and tissue so nobody stands on it i should send you the families details for you to tell them whats happened( no im not exaggerating )after two tossers lost control when racing they hit a biker which sent him over the barrier into the oncoming traffic. his body was left in the north bound carriageway after he had been hit repeatedly leaving his head in the southbound carriageway in hundreds of pieces

Here Here, although I myself like to drive quite quickley these sorts of speeds are very unsafe. My missus' dad was chief fire officer and some of the storie's he told me made me feel sick!! Save this sort of driving for the track!!

Hmmmmm earlier you said the race had to slow for traffic? If it was a track day surely everyone would be flooring it!!!

I tank it on the road sometimes, but only when it's empty. I never really boot it when there's traffic around, because, as outlined above, there are too many twats not paying attention to what's going on around them and are likely to pull out in front of you as you're approaching at 130. As far as those people who are 'texting their bird' or whatever, I do not have a shred of sympathy for anything bad that happens to them. In my opinion, that's far more unacceptable behaviour than tonning it.

"tonning it" is not in the same league as 160 plus
Hmm, I dunno about that. You could argue it is very much in the same league. In both cases, speed limits are but a distant memory shrouded in dust. To a degree, in both cases, caution has been thrown to the wind. Just because a ton is 60 mph less, you and anyone else you hit if things go wrong are still gonna be pâté. In essence, both speeds are fairly ridiculous to be travelling at on anything other than empty roads.

Who's anally retentive? At first I thought you meant the complainers, but then when I read the second bit of your post, it seemed you meant the speeders, which doesn't make any sense. How does doing a ton and a half on the road make them anally retentive? I don't get it.

There are not many drivers out there that can drive at that speed and be in control.

I used to race around like an absolute tw*t when I was younger... That was until the day I decided to race a Mini Cooper in my 1.6 cvh Escort. I got just after half way past him and he put his foot down:eek

Being young and stupid I thought I could get past... and I did!!! The bloke hit the brakes when he realised we were going so fast into a chicane. I flew round the first corner, what a feeling:thumbsup... then oh f*ck the second corner was there... I lost control and could see headlights coming towards me.

It's true what they say about slow motion. I tried to correct but the car was way out of control and the head lights were getting closer. I locked the steering right and held it, went straight across the road just missing the other car. I hit the metal wire fence at god only knows what speed. I wiped out a good length of fencing which rotated the car until the passenger side hit and wrapped around a telegraph pole!!!

Damage to car??? Totalled!!! Front end, NS, Roof, underside... oh and the windscreen that smashed onto my hands.

When I went to see the car in the Police compound I realised how close to death I was. The NS had caved in so much that the passenger seat had flipped backwards and the door pillar was inline with the handbrake. A passenger would've been dead. Those that saw the car couldn't beleive I walked away with a broken collar bone and cut hands!

High speeds and traffic of any type just isn't sensible... Like the judge explained to me when I was in front of him for Dangerous Driving... A car is a potentially lethal weapon when left in the wrong hands.

I walked out of that court with 9 points for driving without due care and attention and a £500 odd pound fine.

Anyway that was about 12 years ago now and i've grown up enough to know there is a time and a place!

The only two times I've crashed, I was doing WELL under 30 mph.

Does anyone know what the Euro NCAP rating for a 1996 E36 Compact is? It feels solid and sturdy, but you never know about that thing. The Discovery is a sardine can!

They are shite in the tests! Especially poor in the leg area. From what I have seen the hold up better in real world crashes.

Well, I saw an early episode of the new format Top Gear when they did an NCAP segment (back in the good old days before it was Last Of The Summer Wine on steroids) and they had a crashed Disco, and the door pillar had just crumpled. It looked quite scary. The door pillar was really thin though, it looked quite a bit thinner than the ones on my Compact. Nice though, to know that these morons that buy these stupid things aren't really that safe after all!

on what track days were you doing 160mph? that's an impressive speed to be hitting, I'll see if we can get than in our 996 Turbo and 997 S as usually they no where near the speeds the superbikes reach on track days.

Anyway, racing anyone on the road is just daft. Whilst I drive/ride fast, its only when I have a clear road and the conditions allow. Its for me to enjoy it, but not get it mixed up mingling with other road users.

As for your question, German cars (except Porsches) are limited to 155mph. When the limiters are removed, then yes they will go faster usually around 160/175 if the road is long enough.

Yeah, I never go fast when it's raining either, I just don't trust it. The problem on the road when it's wet, well one of many actually, is if you lose control, even at slow speed turning a corner, you can total your motor, or maybe even pedestrians. Bin it on a track, you'll most likely just skid off.

You get traffic on a track day as well black rat.....and its even MORE annoying than normal road traffic as you can go as fast as you are able in theory on the track.
but not if theres traffic in the way ;)
