I bought my 2013 640d Msport 80k miles about 3 months ago.
now whenever the car has been stood over night , on its first drive of the day it has very low power , and doesn’t shift gear when it’s should, as if it’s stuck in a “limp home” mode or something like that, it feels like there is no turbo pull and the turbo whistle seems a little louder (no warning lights or errors), it’s a similar feeling to if it was stuck in eco mode or something
if I stop the car and switch it off for about 10 seconds then start again it then runs absolutley fine for the rest of the day until the following morning when it all happens again. The issue only comes on after the car has been stood over night.
do these cars have problems with EGR valves or anything like that or can someone help diagnose it
I had exactly the same issue on mine and it was the inlet manifold all coked up. When you start the car in the morning the swirl flap actuator does a sweep to measure the start and stop positions of the swirl flap linkage. Due to being clogged up the readings are incorrect making the ecu think the linkage has broken. It only does this sweep on initial start up which is why it returns to normal on a restart. To fix it I removed the inlet manifold and cleaned it out with petrol, brake cleaner and a pressure washer. This got it looking like new and the swirl flaps then moved freely. You then have to put a new stop point on the swirl flap actuator as wear in the linkage makes it again go past the point it should again making the ecu think there is an issue. The final bit is to reset the air mass adaptions. It is pretty straight forward as a job and the trickiest bit is putting the new stop on the actuator. There is a post on another six series forum with pictures of how they did it by putting a screw in the actuator housing. Also if you search on this forum you will see my original post when I had the issue. You could put a new manifold on but they cost approx £870. Mine has been perfect since.

If you can scan for codes if it is the same as mine it will throw up code 2c3200. Also this link will show you the modification that you need to do to the actuator. I didn’t use a screw but put some metal putty on it and made a new stop.
it’s a bit of a faff to take the manifold off but not difficult and all new gaskets were about £90. I was shocked by how clogged up it was but now runs great.

getting my swirls done on my 640d on 28th july,,only one small cam(bung) and 6 new gaskets needed,,around £11.my bmw specialist who i use is doing it,although i have done it before on an e46 330d,,at 80k pr so miles these can become a problem, been advised to do it from jason at bwchiptune, always heed advice when its given to me from professionals
The air mass adaptions need to be reset by a diagnostic tool. I considered removing the swirl flaps but the way they are constructed there was no need and when I did it on a 635 d it caused issues with the dpf. When the manifold is removed you will be shocked by how much gunge is in it. The most important bit is to ensure you manufacture a new stop position on the actuator.

Not yet I’m currently away until the 12th august so I’ll be looking to get it sorted when I get back.
I’ve tried a couple of places but I think I’ll take it to Mr Vanos in Darlington he seems to be about the best around
That’s a shame. Might be worth looking at the fault codes as might be a simple fix like mine was. It’s been spot on since cleaning the manifold and altering the swirl flap actuator.
good luck
Jim
Sorry missed your update. Not a hard fix and you could just pop a new manifold on but I chose to clean mine and do the mod on the actuator that operates the swirl flaps. Hope you get it sorted.
cheers

I called into the dealer I bought but from, told him About the issues with it , straight away he offered to buy it back for more or less the same money as I paid for it so I took his hand off.
I miss it dearly as I bought an old mondeo to run about in until I decide what car I want next .
Not a bad result then but to be fair used car prices have shot up this past year. I really want the new 8 series but still out of my price range sadly.
cheers
Jim
no wonder,,my car has went up £2k since i bought it in march 2020
