I've been looking at prices of cars lately and have noticed that the 2000-2005 series BMW is quite often cheaper than the 3-series. Is this just me noticing this? Do they depreciate faster for any particular reason, or is it just the sub-sample that I've looked at?

what models are you looking at (e.g. 530i vs 330i etc)?

IMO, 5 series is a better car and a better buy. Many people do prefer the small executive cars (probably think they are cheaper to run etc or that the smaller cars are just easier to live with in everyday terms like parking etc).

Was looking at the 535/530d, found a few lowish mile ones for ~13k (under 60k, with a few under 40k miles). In the new body frame it would be hard to find a 330/330d for less than 17k even with 60k miles. I know that the current gen 5-series starts in 2004 but the old gen frame the 330d (2004-2005) is about 12-13k which is similar to the current gen 5-series 530d which just seems off.

I personally find the 5 series to be better specc'd in general to 3 series models and my next car will be a 5 series if I stick with a BMW.
