Stops as soon as you let go of the accelerator and only above a certain speed? If so it may be the propshaft

It seems to happen only at that rpm, so I wonder if it's something like a loose, by only a small amount, injector that's hitting a harmonic and vibrating. It does also sound like a slightly out of balance propshaft.

I'd prefer to see a video from a standing start, just accelerating through the gears and speed and seeing if the vibration/noise happens only at that rpm in every gear or just a single gear or whenever ... It's hard to see if the noise stops because it's passed the rpm it vibrates at, or whether it's 'cos you let off the throttle.

Noise stops
  • let off accelerator pedal
  • out of engine speed range between 1300-1400rpm
6th, 7th and 8th gear positions could make this noise. Too quick passing through the speed range with lower gear.

It could be hints that not happen the noise when DPF regeneration and higher altitude more than 500meter.
I guess it comes from not-appropriate damping of torsional excitation from engine and combination with oscillation frequency of whole powertrain, however I am not specialist.

It might be worth checking all the exhaust mounts for strength and bushes/rubber integrity and that it's properly spaced away from body/chassis parts.

I take your car will only do this in gear ?

Can you feel any vibrations ?

Is your car standard?

Have you tried a different dealer ?

Have you showed this video to the dealers?

Post the video up on bmws Facebook book page saying there dealers can’t fix this problem and you are now fed up with it,so does anyone know a good independent bmw specialist that can fix bmws when the dealers can’t

If ever you find the cause, please post it here. I've been to innumerable Dealers and "Experts" to no avail.
I have a 2004 E46 320d with that vibration for the last 5 years and have had to be fatalistic and just learned to live with it.
I have replaced or overhauled the following:
Gearbox overhauled.
Torque Converter twice.
Prop shaft, 3 replaced
Prop Shaft Flexible coupling
Prop Shaft Centre Bearing
Engine, Gearbox and Diff mounts.
Overhauled both side shafts.
Re-trued rear wheels.
etc etc etc.
I've read somewhere that some 320d's have a Harmonic Vibration which is normally detected by the factory, after which Vibration Dampers are fitted either side of and just behind the Diff.
Another possibility which I haven't investigated yet, is that the gearbox input and output shaft Speed Sensors get out of sync somehow, causing the box to be undecided about changing gears, thereby setting up a vibration in the drive train.
It's been an absolute nightmare!!
Good luck. You're going to need it I think.

Thank you for your comments.

My car is absolutely standard and I have not tried to bring another dealer yet.
The video has been sent the dealer weeks ago.

The dealer has contacted me on Monday and they have picked my car up yesterday after my demonstration drive (5th time) with them.
They are talking about hitting exhaust system to a cover during the drive.

A service manager from the dealer has called me today and said it takes longer time because it has to wait for a specialist from BMW.
I am looking forward to see a magic from BMW specialist. I will post a result.

Can you tell me which rpm you get this vibration at and in which gear ?

I have got phone call from service manager of the dealer today.
He said a specialist in BMW has decided to dispatch the special parts from BMW Munich which could not be purchased by normal parts number.
The parts is flexible part of exhaust pipe and ad-blue mixing area, and will be arrived at beginning of next week.

I am wondering that BMW has already had a counter-measure parts in their stock!!!

We will see what would be result in next week.

Dampers to bolt on to the exhaust?

Yep, could be a harmonic damper, vibration works in waves which when different frequencies meet, in a node point, then that causes a localized effect, could be a crack or a noise/vibration. By changing the signature of the effected item (by changing its mass, form or material) you can dissipate the effect.

Hi Everyone,

My car has been returned on Friday. And I have done 2 days careful driving with trying to reproduce the problem.
Finally it seems the problem has been fixed.
The dealer said it is fixed by exchanging ad-blue(DEF) supply line with special parts and all repair work was controlled by BMW Munich. The noise might comes from oscillation of ad-blue hoses or fixation parts.

Facts:
  • I did first report of this problem was end of last year just after delivery of brand-new car.
  • It took 11 months to fix it with 4 meaningless repairs by a local dealer and non of repair report
  • This 5 th repair is first time BMW Munich involved. It was fixed by the special parts BMW has in stock.
I am really unhappy what the dealer behaved past 11 months. I would never buy a brand-new car within 1.5 year from first launch.(not only BMW) It is lessens learned from this incident.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.
