The rear brakes on my 320D tourer take about 5 second's to release the front are ok there is no hill hold or electronic hand brake, had this checked by a independent BMW specialist and he said when plugged into the computer it was showing locked in brake test mode and he could not clear it, he contacted a main dealer and they said it is a software glitch that causes this and can only be cleared by a main dealer, has anyone else experienced this problem.

Check if there's been a recall issued ... A software fault on the brakes sounds pretty serious, and fixing it ought to be at no cost to you!

Thanks, already spoken to Barret's BMW in Canterbury and they say there is no recall for this and they have never heard of this problem and to book in for a fault diagnosis check, basically £120 for them to plug into their computer.

It does sound an odd failure mode, but that's BMW all over! I'd take it in I think, unless you know someone with Ista (whichever flavour for your vehicle), sorry.

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for a while, which might reset some ECU's?
