Hi all

Despite many attempts to cure my problem hand brake, I cannot get the brake adjusted sufficiently to properly hold the car. I am correctly going through the adjustment criteria such as releasing the cable end from inside the car and using the adjusters in each wheel etc etc but I cannot get the car to sufficiently hold. I also have around 6-7 clicks on the hand brake when engaged.

What‘s happening is, when the handbrake is applied and I gently move the car forward and backwards in gear, the shoes move and rotate slightly within the drum as the wheel moves resulting in a slight clunking noise as they hit their stop points in either direction.

I heard somewhere that this is a recognised BMW problem with this type of handbrake setup.

I can only think now that it’s down to stretched cables but I would like to hear from owners who have successfully cured this issue and how they did it.

Many thanks.

Have you had discs off and checked the shoes? Had issues with sticky handbrake lever in the past, also shoes glazing so lowered efficiency.
They can be a bit of a pain to adjust up though, how many clicks back are you going on shoe adjusters after adjusting up so wheel is locked? I read backing off 7 but I ended up doing 4 and then taking car to a quiet industrial estate and reversing at a steady 5mph while applying and releasing handbrake a few times. In reverse the adjuster self adjusts better.
