I was thinking I might write this for my experience of buying an ex police BMW
530D so here goes I bought my 530D last February for the sum of £7800 from west oxford motor auctions see www.woma.co.uk She had 131,000 miles a flat rear rft two holes in the roof two holes and a scrape in the front bumper ex led holes and masses and masses or interior battered missing or otherwise modified..... arm rest removed ash trays removed stero removed few staines ohhhh errr. However she had a few extras cigarette lighters everywhere four inside the car!!! she has the basic air conditioning she has fully electic front seats, basic I drive She has two batterys though, 1x 110A battery and 1x90A battery to run the lights she has extra lights in the head linning in the front extra lights in the rear of the head linning to the boot extra speakers brackets for gun/amunition boxes/mag lights etc.......

Myths..... the police tune up there cars.......this is untrue they choose fast cars in the first place all they do is de-limit them well this is the case with the 530d and the volvo v70 although the volvo T5s do have the diesel models suspension fitted as it is beefed up! Mine is a 231 bhp 2007 model SE I aim to keep updating my progress as I go some of you will have seen me posting for various niggles I have had... The best moment so far was being in my local garage for a MOT I heard them muttering caught the words BMW.....my ears pearked up then the mechanic disapeared again and a Vauxhall astra rolled in next to my car ten minutes later Trevor from Hurley house Bristol came out looking puzzled he said well she has passed it turned out the astra was brought in to check the emissions probe my 530D emissions were so low they thought their probe was knackered I was amazed 131,000 how can the emissions be that of a new car......! shocked we all were. More so that my E39 I had bought ex met police a few years ago was such a dog we expected history to repeat its self! So schools of thought on ex police cars Well I wouldnt buy a beat car in a million years they are driven so hard stop start stop start small engines and a million different drivers.... well the traffic cars have a million drivers but well I travel a 1000 miles a week when I see the dozens of traffic cars that hound the M4 and m5 what are they doing 78mph stalking the next driver to fly past! yeah ok they chase the odd sales rep in a mondeo at 105 but then again these cars will do in excess of 150 mph almost a light jog to a Beemer330/530D Volvo T5/VectraV6 The worst thing these cars go through is perhaps the potential for the cars to be driven hard from cold I have no fanatsys they arent driven hard I had a nearside engne mount that had perished terriable when I bought her (an indicater of fast speed bump driving maybe!!!!). If Im honnest it seemed to clunk like a gearbox problem! As i had convinced my good lady it was a good buy I played this down to her with a sick feeling in my stomach thinking I had bought a pig!:confused But an hour later and £130 lighter I had the problem resolved! phew I thought this would explain why the car I purchased had low miles comparitively to others at the auction with 165-225,000 miles on the clock I believe the fleet manager thought my box was going so thought to get rid ASAP to my advantage I remember a trader saying to me something wrong with that as he felt 131,000 was premature exit from the force!
she stands me in so far at the following

£200 of interior parts to rebuild the dash cd plaer etc from ebay.
£185 for new Bridgestone RFT
£646in next monday for roof resparay front bumper rear bumper.

I then need to de-swirl...... Load cover missing...... gearbox oil change to name a few.... Many would be put off by buying a ex police BMW see my pic to see the mess she was in!! I have come along way and have a way to go.

My dad has a Msport 2009 235 BHP 530D and we get the same MPG he drove her and cant see any difference in engine wear!!! quite a statment his has 10,000 miles and is A1 difference being he paid £26,000 from Dick lovett Bristol I could buy many M sport bumpers and leather interiors for that!!! food for thought joking aside his is a beautiful car. For £7800 I could have ended up with a small car of that age from a dealer getting no more mpg and certainly lower in the smiles stakes!!!!

Watch this space re sparay next Monday cant wait!:thumbsup

Autobox at 130k.. Ide just leave it i think... the oil is probably holding it together.. They're sealed for life supposably but you should really change it every 60k. I think a few members will agree.

Try a guy on here called oilmansi i think it is... he is the guy from opie oils. Very knowledgable!

I used to own a Ford Sierra XR4x4 and that was an x cop car twas really fast and came from Manchester X cars! I loved it till the electrics went and then I bitted it and made quite a lot of money. I payed £400 from a friend and made in excess of 1.5k. It had a stamp (metal plaque) on the dash and I had all the paper work for it stating where it came from it was a special car that one and I wish I never bitted it but back then I didn't know anything about anything let alone car electronics and it was the engine side of things that failed.

Congrats on your BMW I think she's nice and so are your dogs :thumbsup

I've never understood why people say this :confused I've seen a handful of comments along similar lines but can't understand how nice fresh oil can possibly be worse than old black stuff.

Welcome btw, brave man buying an ex-police car! but as you say, the motorway patrol cars are the ones to go for.

Something about the new oil being thinner and dislodging dirt. Some people fail to engage reverse gear IIRC or it gets stuck in reverse, one of them two anyway. If its had regular oil services then its worth doing. If it hasn't i'd leave it well alone, upt o 100k I would be happy to changed it, not after though

Whenever you do it, just don't hold a can of Dr Pepper and say "whats the worst that could happen" :hihi

HTH :thumbsup
