Hi everyone,

2 months ago I bought a 2nd hand 120 series 1. Last Thursday on the M62, the engine mgt light came on, the car went into limp mode, and I realised that it was on fire!. Managed to get onto the hard shoulder, tried to stop but no brakes. Used the hand brake to stop, and the car caught fire and subsequently burnt right out. The entire front has gone, with only the boot intact. Im waiting for BMW to get back to me, but does anyone have any ideas what might have caused this. Loved the car and want to get another, but ......

Cheers for any response.

Thanks.

Sounds like N47 engine and failed EGR bypass valve. Melted intake manifold and then caught fire. Not the first and not the last.

I agree and this is typical of the egr recall and is not the first to go up in flames. Pleased you got out safely which ultimately is the most important factor.

It’s the parts company bmw use as the will use the cheapest they can

These EGRs on the n47 wears a dip in the metal as the metal is not heat tread and is very soft
The egr then gets stuck open

All the ones we have programmed to stay shut from many years ago have not had any problems

Thanks for your reply. Tried BMW but no response.

Looking at a 2008 series 1, would that have the same engine?.
