The other day my car was acting strangely. Dash lights were on and off, lights and windows were working/not working. It seemed random. It even started affecting the fans and I got a overheating so I shut the car down and requested recovery. AA worked out that the alternator was overcharging, causing these issues. They disconnected the alternator and I drove home on battery.

Should I replace the whole alternator or just the voltage regulator on it?

335i aren't cheap to own, I understand that, but the genuine BMW (Bosch) alternator is £800-£1200. If I should replace the whole alternator, would an equivlent be enough? There are plenty around.

I had a similar over charging issue on an e60 and I just changed the regulator. It was straight forward, was loads cheaper and sorted the problem out.
Cheers
