Just bought a 320d M sport on a 55 plate the face lift model only done 17000 miles but it drives very irratic at times, it seems to want go left and right on its own, it also tends to lurch to the right if you catch the white line in the middle of the road and the steering feels quite heavy. I have had the tracking done and all the wheels balanced which has improved it some what, is this a common fault or is it how the car should be?

Is it on runflat tyres? If so, this could be the problem. I did not really experience this, but they are said to "tramline" due to the fact that they are hard as iron. With 17k on the clock, they could be the original Bridgstone runflats - as bad a tyre as I have ever experienced.

Do a seach for "changing to non-runflats" and have a read.

Also, you mention tracking. You really need a 4 wheel laser alignment. Don't go to BMW though. Try www.alignmycar.co.uk

I've the exact same problem with my car (Dec 2005 - 320d MSport) and the roads in ireland are alot worse than the UK.

My car has 45k and is running Pirelli Runflats. I dropped it into a BMW specialist last week to have the tracking checked, which he did but he said the only real option was to get rid of the Runflats which he is kept very busy doing for some fleet customers.

It's a real shame because you really have to "hang-on" to the steering wheel in case the car finds a rut in the road, but I've only got another few miles in the tyres and I'll be replacing them with normal tyres and a compressor.

Steering

Yes it does have the original Bridgestone RFT, I will be replacing them with non run flats once these have worn thanks.:)

If you wish to replace the full set earlier, you could ebay the good ones. They seem to sell. Event tyres fitted me a full set of Falken FK452's at home for £380 all in, c10 months ago. Tyres are fine 12k further on.

Runflats. Definitely the runflats. I get this all the time but to be honest, I picked up a nail 30 miles from home the other week on the M3 and made it home without any fuss and without having to change the thing on the hard shoulder. Quite pleased really. And I managed to get it fixed for a tenner.

Just bought mine and it has new Bridgestone runflats on it. Hate the bloody things already LOL. When it comes to new tyres I am thinking Toyo T-1R's

I had similar problems - BMW has diagnosed three buckled wheels - that's one wheel for every year I've had it. And of course, not covered by the warranty
