Hi there

I'm new to this and Im really hoping someone can shed some light on the problem I have.

I just purchased a 645 convertible last week and just the other day I turned on the car and the sat nav screen keeps flashing on and off ie the BMW sign flickers. The I drive doesnt work, therefore parking sensor display is not visible, cannot access cd/radio etc

For the first day, after driving for 5 mins the radio would kick in and the flashing would stop and the i-drive is working fine. As soon as you turn the car off and start it up again, back comes the problem!

Now today - same thing, the screen keeps flashing on and off (i drive not working) but now drove for 1hr+ and still the problem persits ie unlike yesterday it hasnt kicked in.

In all honesty I'm dreading a potential I drive problem - probably couldnt afford a major bill. BMW dealer want £66 + VAT for half an hour diagnostics but if anyone has previous experience or any knowledge - your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

If BMW can diagnose in 30 mins for £66 - although a lot of dosh - I'd let them! You could use a local indie if you have one who labour rate is almost certainly less. The 6 is a fiercely expensive car to maintain so now might be a good time to befriend you local indie anyway??

It sounds like either a software issue or maybe a power supply malfunction?

Hi, See if you can remove all the discs from the unit and unplug the flash connector in the glove box. You can then hold both eject buttons down whilst pressing the on/off button then let go of them again. I must say from experience that 9 times out of 10 this normally leads to the replacement of the CCC (car communication computer)

Have you checked your battery condition ? A poor battery throws up all sorts of strange issues. If it all kicks in after 5 mins this may be because the battery charges itself in those few minutes.
I have let my battery get low a couple of times for stupid reasons and my dash is like a christmas tree, i-drive doesn't work, etc.

Thanks for your replies.

I did try the reset holding down the 2 eject buttoms, picked this up from a US forum but unfortuntaley this hasnt cured the problem.

I've read somewhere about "reboot the computer with the latest software", apparently this will cost in the region of £120 but has anyone had this done and more importantly do you think this will resolve my problem?

I think it's going to have to go into BMW Chiswick but I'm dreading the outcome!

Similar issue - strange happenings

Hi All, I'm new to this forum so please forgive me if I've hijacked another thread, I couldn't find anywhere to post this.

Anyway, driving today in my 645CI Conv, stuck in a little traffic, nothing too major and the IDrive starts to dim, light up, dim etc, then looks like an old commodore 64 loading up, next thing I have ABS lights, then power steering lights (and power steering fails) then apparently flat tyres and the whole car just goes into limp mode (Auto), nursed it over a couple of miles but then under a bit of acceleration, there is no power, literally just limping so I pulled over and turned the engine off (engine was idling very slowly and strained). Then I try to start again but just get nothing, just a bit of that horrible noise when there's no power, a few relays etc. Called the AA and left the car for 40 mins. Got back to the car before the AA arrive and for the crack decided to give it a try, bingo, all started no worries and apart from the wiped clock etc, car is sweet. I've only had the car a month and I'm very worried. Any ideas? Should I be concerned?

Many thanks,

Lewis

Yes, but maybe not for anything terminal......but expensive nonetheless. You haven't com e back on your original problem, so suggestions of power supply, software etc still apply.

Get the codes read by the Stealer or Indie - I realise it costs dosh, but it's guesswork otherwise and that's dearer!!

Thanks for this, just for clarity, I'm not the original poster, just piggy backed off his post, but good advice all the same. I've found what looks like a reputable indie in Wolverhampton to have a look at it - BM Euroservice if that means anything to you. Anyway, seperate issue and one that I am really worried about, under light acceleration there is almost a grinding noise and it seems as if I've lost some power, may be a coincidence but I've only noticed it since this problem a couple of days ago.

I actually have some concerns about my car since I bought it a month ago as to the offical mileage of the thing, the interior has clearly been refurbed although only 48k miles and the dealer lied to me about TV and phone function. Now with this apparent noise under acceleration and power loss I'm thinking the worst. Only saving grace is that there is some dealer warranty on but I can't trust them as far as I can throw them TBH.

Any ideas on statutory rights when buying second hand cars from dealers, they gave me 3 months warranty but I've heard that I should assume 6 months anyway regardless of their policy.

Hope I haven't bought a dud, it's a beautiful machine otherwise.

Cheers,

Lewis

Suggest you start a separate post (jusy copy/paste yours) following the posting title rules. Reasons for this are you'll get more attention to a dofferent/new thread, but also any advice can be found for others...

for the life of me can't find where / how to post a thread! That's why I piggy backed of this one originally. Do I need more permissions as a user? Only joined on Monday night.

Thanks,

Hi,

Nice to see someone hijacking my post!

Anyway an update on my problem - BMW have looked at it and tried a software upgrade which didnt work, then checked all the wiring to see if there were any loose connections but failing that they have come back to me saying I need a new CCU (Communication Control Unit).

The cost they have quoted is £940 - part and labour!

Will post a further update towards the end of the week.

Regards

Hi ik186,

Sorry about that, I get the way things work now! Anyway, good luck with your car problems, I'm sure that whatever BMW quote you'll probably reduce the cost by at least 35% by taking your car to an independant specialist. Sorry if I'm preaching to the converted but I'm discovering the same things that you are and have found a really good independant nearby whom I trust a lot more than my local dealership and they're cheaper!.

Once again, good luck and maybe see you at Santa Pod?

Best Regards,

Lewis

Hi guys,

Just thought I would give you an update to the problem I posted back in August. This has been on going and has only just been resolved yesterday (well I hope so).

If you remember I was loosing everything from radio, Sat Nav, no traction in the I drive because my Sat Nav screen was intermittently flashing on and off as if it was trying to boot up. Well it went into BMW who initially diagnosed it as a fault with the CCU and said I needed a new one at a cost of aprox £850!

I have a private warranty where I paid a lot to get their top product, what a waste of money that turned out to be! There engineers turned up and of course the problem wasn't there even though the car was with BMW and their Master technician confirmed the problem along with the videos I had taken. I also got the General Manager from BMW to speak to them but they weren't having it. Anyway this went on through Sep and Oct eventually going to their underwriters with numerous videos showing proof of the problem.

At the end of Oct I lost all audio (that's when the system was working) which I assumed was part of the same problem. Got the warranty engineer out again, and low and behold the bloody thing was working even though the week up to him coming, it kept on trying to boot up without actually working! What the engineer did manage to confirm was there was no audio so back it went into BMW.

After another week with them they put in a new CCU but that didn't do the trick so they took that out and we were back to square one!! Then they diagnosed it as a problem with low voltage from the battery and so they charged it overnight and said that had cured the problem. I said are you sure and they said positive giving me some technical explanation which was suppose to convince me. I went to pick up the car from them and NO AUDIO!

They told me to take the car away and book it again the following week. So once again we were now in mid Nov and the car was back with BMW. Now they picked up a problem with the IPod unit and replaced this at a cost of £350 and yes I got my audio back and I was assured this would resolve the intermittent screen flashing and loss of all my functions. Well as I went to pick up the car from their workshop and started it up the same flashing problem, their manager and master technician came out and said it was because the car had not been touched overnight and the software was booting itself up.

So I took the car home and the next 2/3 days the flashing of the screen/loss of all functions was still there! Phoned BMW and they said they needed to have a meeting and discuss what the next steps were. No response and now we are in 2nd week Dec, phoned and spoke to their General Manager and explained it was now 4 months and nothing had been resolved but just cost me money. Told them that this was no different to going to a local garage and them just trying everything. Surely if BMW didn't have the answers, then what could I do.

Anyway (hope your still reading) finally went in early this week and they worked out the DVD drive was sticking so they replaced this - 4 months of pure hell to get to this point in which time they dented my car and then refused to accept liability so I had to get it fixed and then recently chipped paint off the door to which they eventually said they will sort out.

No luck with the Warranty people as they have tried every trick in the book to ensure they never pay out. Warning do not waste good money on a warranty!!!

So apologies but I had to wait until now to post because I wanted everyone to know what the solution was if they ever encounter something like this.

Sorry to hear that mate - did the DVD change actually solve the problem?

Although it's perhaps a waste of a stamp, I'd suggest sending a polite, but firm letter forstly to the dealer principal CC or separate letter to BMW UK. They're not known for their generiosity(even less so on older cars) but even if you get a free service or something from them, it'd be better than nough.

Re the warranty - I don't entirely agree with you as almost all do cover the major car parts (engine, tranny etc) but those I researched specifically excluded the more isoteric parts like the I-drive.

Check battery voltage with engine off, also with engine running should get around 12.6volts with it off and 14 with engine running.

If above is ok then check wiring to CCC has no broken wires especially the fibre optic cable.
