I am the owner of a 05 E60 535d sport. For the last 6 months I have been having an intermittent problem with the car going into "idle" mode when it has been driven hard, most common when I it is revved near redline in 4th gear. If car is immediately turned off then on again, problem is cleared. I have had it serviced since then but no fault code ever appears as it isn't in the idle mode. I finally got round to reading the fault code today when in idle mode and it is flagging up 428b (boost pressure control deviation too high). Would anyone be able to tell me what would be my next best step forward. Least cost options first!!! Any help muchly appreciated.
Those fault codes are often a red herring for something else. Do you know what engine it is? M57 or N57? I think it is an M57
Often a damn good clean of the EGR valve, inlet manifold, MAP sensor and intercooler exterior do the trick, however the 335d have a complex three way pressure converter to activate the two turbos and that is expensive when it breaks. A simple first task however is to replace all the vacuum hoses.
Try that for starters and see if it helps, if you are handy with a spanner it is all DIY stuff, if not it is about 2 hours labour.
My 320d had a very similar issue when you redlined it in 2nd and 3rd and it was caused by a dirty MAP sensor combined with a dodgy camshaft position sensor
