Hi Guys, could this be a simple answer, im looking at changing the battery on my 530d, however there is conflicting reports about it being a dealer only job?

Is that true? Or can i just swap it over myself?

After swapping the battery you should register the battery with the ECU, so it knows the size/amps. Any BMW specialist can do this for you.

...although many people (including me) don't bother and have never had an issue. This may be a condition of buying exactly the same a/h and CCA battery perhaps.

I changed mine on my E60 535d with the exact same type (all £180s worth from the main dealer but it is the biggest car battery I've ever seen!) and didn't have any trouble/need for registering. Reset the clock and the speed limiters - that was about it as I recall.

As long as you buy a new battery that is close (doesn't have to be exact) to the standard battery in terms of Amp Hours then absolutely no need to go anywhere near a dealer.
Was quoted over £110 for mine (for a 525D) from dealer and got a Varta unit for £60. No probs whatsoever and that was nearly a year ago.
