I'm currently still to do a brim-brim on my 330Cd to check consumption and do some real research.

But I *think* when I look at the economy meter, at 70mph and < 2000 rpm, in 6th it's at about 40mpg and at ~2300 rpm, in 5th it seems to be nearer 50mpg

Is this an illusion or should I have it 5th at 70 mph?

Cheers.

Not checked the ratios for your car, but on the 328 5th gear is 1:1 and the best gear for economy, the 6th gear on your car is probably an overdrive, and is also pretty long. If you cruise at 100mph, 6th is going to be more economical than 5th.

Some engines by their design, are less efficient at certain parts of the rev range, yours might not be very economical at 2000rpm, might be more economical at 1800 or 2200.

My clio 200 was more economical at 40 than it was at 60 and really uneconomical at 85+ whereas my 328 is most economical at 75-90.

:) ;)

Seriously, IME, some manufacturers of cars with 6 gears recommend that you select 6th at 80-ish. ie @ 2000rpm, the car is less fuel efficient than at 2500rpm. Is this true for the 3.0l diesel BMW?

{edit}

I notice peak torque on the 330cd doesn't occur until >2200rpm so isn't at it's most efficient in 6th just under 2000rpm?
