please help ... my engine has just gone and i need a new one.

my 730d is 2004 registered with the m57n engine, i have been offered a deal on a 2005 mt57n engine which i believe is the 'upgrade'.

does anyone know if these are compatible?

has anyone ever made this change before?

any help would be much appreciated as i have already speny £000's on a new turbo and intercooler and can't afford to buy the wrong engine.

thanks

Mine is 04 plate with roughly 78000 miles.

Basically tapping noise and loads of smoke, suspected turbo so changed that and intercooler. Went to road test and still no power plus smoke from bonnet.

Removed manifold to find that 3 of the 'valves' had completely detached from the manifold and have been bouncing around the engine (don't know how long for).

After getting around the engine found a 'plug and play' chip (can't remember manufacturer) but mechaninc said he'd seen this happen twice (worked for BMW for 15 years) both vehicles had one of these chips. The other that went was a 3.0d X5.

Expensive start to 2011! :)

Thats exactly what I was trying to say!ha ha

Had a look but all I can find are photo's of someone who was more fortunate and didn't have complete failure.

Any help or info you find would be a fantastic help, cheers Ronnie.
