Hi - hope someone can help.

I have a 2004 525d se with a bit of a problem

Firstly on the way to work the outside temperature shows as -40!!! I know it has been cold but..... I drive off and it picks up to about normal then goes to +23! It acts erratic on the way home too!

Today I use the car again and the LCD between the speedo and rev counter is almost completely lit and can't be turned down. It is so bright that nothing can be read off it. At the same time fuel gauge, speedo, rev counter and mpg on the 2 circular instruments all read zero!

Any ideas?

Thanks

Have you checked the Instrument Cluster fuse? On the E36 its fuse 22, 26 or 37.

Also something to check would be the connections on the rear of the Instrument Cluster, although this will require the cluster to be removed.

Drove it this morning - display intermittently working, same with the gauges, temp at -37 when it's nearer +3 and the parking sensor shows as having a fault. Local auto electrical specialist reckons it is probably an ECU problem. What do you think?

-40 is the default setting if the outside temp sensor is knackered or if there's a broken wire/bad connection.

When the dials pack in try this....

Do a binnacle test, Hold down the mileage reset button with the ignition off, turn the ignition key to position 1, Wait for TEST to appear and then release reset button, watch as the binnacle does a self test.

Do the gauges go round and back again?

Hi Ronnie

Just tried what you suggested but no movements in the dials at all. All I got was the following

01:00
FGSTNR
B591217

What does that mean?

Either the clocks are knackered or you have a bad connection on the rear of the clocks, remove the cluster(clocks) and check the 2 plugs on the rear :thumbsup

Thanks - I'll try that.

Do you think they might be right in saying that a new dashboard head might be needed? They are quoting £980 + VAT!!

Every possibility, but at that price I would find another option :rofl

I shall find out the choices on 2nd hand ones for you, IIRC it will need coding(programming) to the car

Thanks - if you could that would be fantastic!

The dials worked temporarily and are now stuck in place at 30mph, 2000 revs, full tank and lowish mpg so I don't think it is looking very promising.

Am loathe to spend the kind of money that they are suggesting so if it is possible to get a cheaper option I would appreciate any details you have.

The instrument cluster is coded to the car with the VIN number installed, unfortunately a second hand one can't be fitted OR programmed to fit by the dealers :frown

Haven spoke to another Auto electrician yesterday he said "I expect someone somewhere can get round it and code a cluster for your car but it's finding that person :frown",

He also said he has headaches galore now as so many new cars need more expensive diagnostic equipment so you can look further into problems and code items e.t.c :mad

But otherwise unless you can find someone "technical" enough it will be a new cluster
