2004 E46 N46 318i VVT dramas...

Hi all,

First time poster as I've got an issue that just doesn't make sense...

Background:
Basic oil/filter change (which I completed, started the car and verified level), no issues with this.

Had to do the rocker cover gasket as it was leaking oil from the back corner causing oil to drop onto the exhaust manifold.

Changed the gasket, no dramas, cleaned all the connectors with contact cleaner prior to refitting up.

I found the eccentric sensor plug had oil in it, hit it with contact cleaner and soaked up the residue (only highlighting as I've seen a lot of talk about this, but keep in mind the car was running fine prior to this task).

Ready to start it up, put the key to ON, waiting for all buzzing/noises from the throttle body to stop, turned it on and it sounded rough, saw the engine light and EML light have both come on. Started the engine again and idled relatively fine? Starts up every time and still does.

Put a snap on scan tool on and have codes:
  • 2A6B (power supply limit vvt-emergency)
  • 2A70 (valvtronic sporadic current fluctuation)
  • 2A69 (vvt-power supply)
  • 2A71 (output stage diagnostics of discharge relay vvt)

I can clear the codes with the engine only set to IGN ON, and the only code that comes back straight away when I rescan is the 2A69.

I have cleaned the eccentric sensor plugs again and checked all fitments, checked all plugs, and still have this issue.

With the car at idle I am only getting 3.7v to the VVT motor when the snap on tool says it should be alternator voltage essentially. However with the engine in EML I wonder if the motor isn't getting full voltage?

Using the snap on tool to force/test the VVT motor also results in a single buzz noise but not from the motor and nothing happens, nor can I get the snap on tool to set the maximum end stroke limit, it keeps asking for the IGN to be ON when it is already on, all other function tests work otherwise as expected.

I don't know how this issue has happened from simply doing a rocker cover gasket change. I worry that either the VVT motor or eccentric sensor have stuffed up randomly.

Thanks for spending the time to read this long post, but I'm lost.

Cheers!
Hi, I am having a similar problem with my e90 have you got to the bottom of your issue?

Hi, I rectified my issue after a lot of testing - most of it unnecessary.

I removed the battery to put it on charge and in doing so discovered one of the positive cables did not feel secure.
I pulled back the sound proofing and found that where the positive cables go through the body had corroded causing a poor connection.

I cleaned the connection and fitted new nuts.
Refitted the battery after charging.
Refitted the valvtronic motor as I had it off to bench test.
Carried out a relearn of the valvetronic motor which finally worked and cleared the fault code.
Hopefully this helps a few people as I cannot find any fixes for the 2a69 fault code.

I have a video of where to look also but I don’t know how to upload it.

I was using a snap on diagnostic tool to carry out the relearn
