2004 E46 320d tourer - head gasket gone, sorted it wasnt the head it's the exhaust cooling pipe

HELP

The car has just started using water and pumping a lot of steam out of the exhaust :mad
Common sense tells me this is a head gasket problem but I'm a bit dissapointed if it is as the car hasn't overheated and has only done 68k miles.

Questions
Is there anything else that could cause this (the waterways into the EGR he says hopefully)?

If it is the head gasket what sort of money am I looking at to get it sorted (indy garage)?

how much steam is being produced?
enough to see a big cloud at 30 mph?...or a light amount at idle?
how often are you having to top up the header tank?

Lots of steam unfortunately BUT I think I've just had a bit of good news....

I took the large pipe off the EGR valve when the car was running and noticed that everytime the valve opened it squirted water so it looks like there must be an internal leak in the part that houses the EGR thermostat - is this a known fault?

maybe one of the derv specialists will happen along and give the benefit of their experience
