I know that on some of the modern diesels the glow plugs cut in and out when driving to keep the intake temp up. Not sure on yours but i can see if i can find some info tomorrow. It could affect the performance if the intake temp is not correct on those two pots :thumbsup
How easy are the glow plugs to remove?
You can test them with a set of jump leads and a battery;)

Depending on how cold the outside temperature the glow plugs stay on for a set time at start up and while running to help smooth the engine out.

But they won't make any difference while driving with the revs up.

Where did you get the codes read to? was it a BMW specialist or were the codes read with just a OBD scanner?

glow plugs are easy enough to change, i read the codes using a snap on scan tool myself in work. it doesn't always happen it comes and goes. think i will change the glow plugs when i do the service, see how it goes from there. looking to get a remap done soon but want to solve this problem first, anyone have an idea on what oil is best to put in?? thanks for your help. paul

Hi Paul, did you manage to resolve this issue!? I am having exactly the same issue on my 2005 320CD SPORT (E46) and I took it to Steve Rowley the BMW Specialist in Cheltenham today and he told me he couldn't find anything other than a problem with the glow plugs which he insisted isn't related to the juddering problem! I've arranged to take it back to get the glow plugs (2 of them) sorted (can anyone advise on a rough price I should be paying for this? He says £65) but want to know if this will fix the problem or whether I should be looking for other things?

Thanks in advance.
