Hi all,

I had the EML light on the other day and then it suddenly disappeared.

Anyway, I ordered a Peake code reader, but I was told it is out of stock (will be available in 2-3 weeks).

This got me thinking/looking into other options, and I am completely lost!!!

DIS, INPA, CARSOFT, etc etc etc

Can someone please tell me in simple terms what it is I need in order to hook my laptop to the car? cable + decoder + software?

Any suggestions which software has the most options but does not require a higher degree to operate it?

Thank you for your replies guys, and the useful thread!

I dont seem to have the round connector in the engine, just the 16 pin connector under the steering wheel (my car is 05/2004).

I have found these on ebay:

I had the modded VAG COM lead but upgraded to one like you've just listed, imo it all depends on what software you want to run
and how far down the diagnostic/reprogramming route you want to go?

If its simply INPA you're looking at then I'd opt for the cheaper lead, use a USB to RS232 converter to suit the lead connector.
If you'd like to use GT1,DIS,SSS then the more expensive USB would be my choice.

Hi joylove, I have had many looks at your list, please dont feel that I ignored your advise. On the contrary I found it very helpful.

The items on your list are all VAG-COM for VW and AUDI and I believe will require modification (as others have mentioned) which I would like to avoid (only cause I dont think I can do it!). Also all items are from China or Hong-Kong so probably up for a long wait!

This is why I took your advise for going USB and started looking for BMW related cables in the UK.

By the way, the last cable I listed also comes with a full version of Inpa and DIS/GT1 v44.

Hope you understand that I am new to all this, and please dont feel :mad

OK, so those USB OBD2 adaptors are not VAG specific. OBD2 is not VAG specific.

All cars post 1999 are OBD2. Your BMW is OBD2. You need an OBD2 adaptor.

Adding VAGCOM to the search just brings up cheaper USB OBD2 adaptors. They are all the same inside, consisting of a USB RS232 chip and a TH32122 K line (aka OBD2 aka ISO9141) convertor chip.

You will find that you will probably need to short pins 7 & 8, no matter what adaptor you buy. They are all the same inside. Adding BMW to the description adds £20 to the price, but you get the same device.

As for Software, DIS/SSS requires a lot of work to get going. It's based around the GT1 WLAN head (£1000 ish), and requires you to configure a spoof network to trick the SSS into thinking there is a GT1 when you have a USB adaptor.

I've stuck with INPA, it works, has more features than I need, reads and clears error codes. It's not pretty but it's very much not a toy so I don't give two hoots about the looks!

Thank you my friend! I ordered a VAGCOM USB cable from ebay.

Sounds like I should start with INPA too, being new to all this. Which INPA version do you use?

If you check the guide on E46fanatics I posted it tells you where I got it. It is INPA Version 5.00, EDIABAS is V6.4.7.

Success! :) (well, partially!)

I followed your guide and managed to install this! Thank you so much for the excellent write up!

I even managed to get a code from the engine:

2A69 CDKDVULV - VVT-Power supply

Error counter: 1
Logistic counter: 20


Now, although the I can connect to the engine (with ignition on) I cannot connect to other modules. Does this mean I have to modify the VAGCOM cable? (its unmodified at the moment).

Another point is that I cannot find any FIFO buffer settings for the COM1 port, if this has anything to do with this!

The buffer settings are there to make sure you don't get missed messages. INPA hammers the data port. You can add or edit the registry entry as detailed in the guide, plus use the DOS program as detailed in the guide to make sure it worked.

my car has only the 16pin socket under the steering wheel.

I modified the vagcom cable (bridged pin 7 and 8) and now I can access most modules.

I read somewhere that EasyDIS is more user friendly so I got this but have not tried it yet.

I thought I share the link I got it from, as it has all programmes one could want! Not sure I am allowed to post the link, so just google the following:

"The files to an EasyDIS\GT1\INPA and Carsoft 6.5 machine!"
