Hi all, new member here!

I'm Reeve, I'm 16 , from Liverpool and have just made my third BMW purchase, a 2004 BMW 316i SE (previous cars are a very broken E36 318ti and a now scrapped 316i Compact parts car).

She's had a hard life, 174000 miles to date (a lot on that less than stellar N42 engine... 100000 of those miles was before its 4th birthday) so she's a bit rough around the edges, but for £250 I couldn't resist. If (and its a big if indeed) insurance isn't monstrously expensive (let's just pretend it wont!), I'd love to keep it as my first car, but if I cant, my mum (soon to receive a new G30 530d) wouldn't mind keeping it as a second car. I know its by no means quick, but all I want in a first car is something that is nice to drive and not so powerful that I'll kill myself. If insurance was cheaper, the 316i would be perfect as I adore the E46 chassis.

Work starts on it this weekend, first job is giving it a big service and getting the exhaust fixed/replaced due to the massive leak it has, then hopefully getting it in for an MOT (I've checked over most failure points and ordered the necessary parts). Only other big issue is the typical N42 timing chain tensioner rattle and a few broken interior bits.

I'll keep the thread updated as I'd love to be more involved in the forum!

Cheers,
Reeve

Welcome Reeve. I'm sure you'll have a lot if fun with your new project.
Takes me back to my last car ... a brand new E46 318i which I bought back in 1999. I felt like the dogs bollox when I first drove out of the forecourt. I sold it only last year after 18 years of generally happy motoring and 170k miles. I'm sure that M43 would have run forever.

Sold it for 200 quid. The guy who took it off my hands though he got the bargain of the century...

Thanks Underwurlde, the 316i Compact I scrapped had an M43 with around 160k on it, hadn't started in a year but within 10 minutes of coughing into life it felt like it could have done another 160k. Now the N42 on the otherhand...

16 and on 3rd car already... worse than me! :hihi Nice car though, liking the colour.

Give Crowthorne Insurance a ring when you first get quotes, they were pretty decent for me (Specialise in young drivers) was nearly 10 years ago now mind!

Thanka very much! Will give them a look. I thought it was Titan Silver at first, turns out its Silver Gray (Silbergrau).

Gave the car some shell v-power and a service, minus spark plugs (unfortunately they have yet to arrive), but with some 0w-30 the typical N42 rattle was reduced, but I'll try a timing tensioner replacement to see if that solves the problem entirely. I gave it a quick drive on the private road, shifts felt nice, it pulled pretty well and the steering gave good feedback without being to heavy. I'm really happy with the way the e46 drives, especially one with 174,000 miles on it!

Here's some posts from my social media, second image shows how for just £17 you really should replace your cabin air filter every once in a while!!

Sorry for the lack of updates, broke my phone so no pictures.

Since the last update I've replaced the timing chain tensioner (made some difference to the rattle), got new front tyres installed (the old ones were dry rotted) and replaced the casette head unit with the Alpine CD unit.

I've also taken off the old snapped muffler, but I stupidly bought a pre-facelift 316i muffler and I doubt it will fit...

However today I had a bit of a problem xD Serpentine belt shredded! So aswell as new belt I'm going to have to install new belt tensioner and probably a new deflection pulley...

Hi Reeve,

Nice to see some one doing up a lowly one like my 318i, mine is 1998 saloon, 119,000 miles.
Paid £400 for it.
10 months mot.
Head gasket had gone, put some steel seal in coolant and its holding OK.
The engine is running sweet, no rattles at all and pulls great.

Just replaced the GM5 as the doors were not opening correctly.
This was a good learning curve mind, bought a used one and reprogrammed key.

Diff mountings need changing next.

Ian
