I was reading on another forum about alarms not being standard on BMWs and that the flashing light in the underside of the rear view mirror may flash even if the alarm is not fitted.

When I insured the car I told them it had factory standard alarm and immobiliser but now I'm not sure - I just assumed that all cars made after the 1990s(ish) had alarms as standard.

What's the easiest way I can find out if my car has an alarm installed?

Sit in the car and lock it on the fob, then move around after 30 seconds, if it goes off you have one

Tried this yesterday - nothing - bugger - suppose i should tell the insurance company it doesn't have an alarm and watch my premium go up.

You'd think they would include it as standard:mad

Just checked under ultrasonic cover in the headlining - the sensors are there so locked the car with me inside and waited for more than 30 slow seconds - moved and it started beeping at me -

anyone know how to activate the chirping and hazards flashing on arm/disarm?

Yes just get your fingers between it and the headlining - make sure your hands are clean! and pull it down, it just clips off and back on, the ultrasonic unit is a black box with a connector and a few wires going in you'll notice it as it takes up most of the room in the cover.

If you do the "lock yourself in the car check" make sure you only press the lock on the key fob once, otherwise the sonics will be disabled (for when you leave people in the car or in the summer when you leave the windows open a bit)

Should mention that sometimes you have to wait for 30secs or a minute when in the car and locking it
