Hi, just discovered my car wont rev beyond 4000 ish rpm. Sounds and feels like its hitting a limiter, also sounds a bit growly/rattely at 4000rpm (if that description of the noise makes any sense??) Anyone got any ideas as to why and what it could be? Thank you.

Well not driven a 320d to compare? But all I can say is my 330d will pull ok from tick over then the turbo will come in from 1200 fully by 1500 then it flies. 4000rpm is peak hp but there's still plenty of power if you do want to rev it to 5000.

So in short yours dosent sound quite right to me :confused

Thanks gentleway, trixxz and xmak.

gentleway, is the MAF sensor the one thats located at the back of the inlet manifold (ie under the pollen filter housing)

trixxz, where can i see the peak torque figures?

xmak, do you know what actually causes the turbo to start working? any ideas how i would find out at what rpm its supposed to work on a 320d?

once again, thanks to everyone.

Nope that's the MAP sensor (BMW call it a fuel pressure sensor!?). The MAF is easier to get to and disconnect, look at this thread for some good pics from SlowTech. If you do decide to replace it, make sure you get a genuine Bosch part.

Can see torque graphs here

The turbo is always working, it's powered by the exhaust gases, if the engine is on, the turbo is spinning! It speeds up with rpms and starts boosting a little bit after 1,500rpm (on my 320d anyway!)

Hi and thanks again people!
Vinayk,, a remap sounds interesting, whats involved in doing that then?
.
thc4me to get more power go for a remap the best thing to talk to the tuners on the forum and ask what sort of gains you goner get in your car and the price and you are entitled to forum discount too.

to remap your car it will only take 30-45 mins

Hi, not only is it not happy about going over 4000rpm, in 3rd gear if the revs are between 1000 and 1750rpm there is really not much power at all. Is this normal? I have been used to driving a 2ltr gti petrol, never owned a diesel before so not really sure how they should perform.

thc4me....I have the same vehicle but touring..mine hits the governor at the first of the 2 close together lines before the red on the tacho ( about4500 rpm) Dont forget its a heavy car and only 2.0 but I certainly wouldnt say its sluggish..tickover to about 1500 is not exactly eye watering but once you hit 1500 rpm then you certainly feel the boost come in and for a 2.0 it really pulls ( up to about 4000 then you dont really gain anything) and its totally standard bar swirl flaps..

Just my ten pence worth -

Revs are limited in neutral and the car will only rev to the red line under load (Very clever!)

My car was sluggish when I first got it. It was owned by a grave dodger for it's whole life. Now it's finding it's legs :)

Hi all. I'm having same problem with my 2002 320d touring....engine went bang a few months back and now I've got a recon engine in it and performance has seriously dropped... Thought it might have been the exhaust which was blowing on the front pipe flexy joint, which I finally got sorted about a week ago but it's still very slow almost like the turbo isn't even working but it doesn't smoke ticks over and starts with no problems and the mpg is 55...will try unplugging the maf tomorrow to see if that helps but any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Btw when I say engine went bang I mean rod went through the rhs of block puncturing turbo pipe (and dumping all the oil out) and it smashed 2 of the cams so it's had most of the bits inside it changed as well as a new fuel pump, turbo pipe, recon'ed injectors and more...costing me a small fortune!
It is quite useless when I get into 5th gear and come to any kind of hill, losing speed, dropping from 75 to about 60, where before it would accelerate from 75 to about 90 up it...4th is a little better holding the speed but still not really accelerating...Had a new turbo fitted about 60000 miles ago and like I say not smoking...
Any ideas??

That dont sound right at all phil4321, I would get that plugged into the diagnostic machine and get any codes posted up. Mine pulls like a train all the way through every gear, on a hill or not. Are all the air pipes definatly fitted correctly and no holes in them anywhere???

Mine wont rev past 4000k standing still in neutral, but will rev to about 4500k once driving, not sure if this is how it should be or if age has anything to do with it as they changed the engine in 2003 so I dont know if older ones are different, mines a 54???

Anyway, you should be changing into the next gear at 4000k, reving the nuts of a diesel wont get you anywhere, changing at peak points of bhp an torque will, but I understand what your saying, even though you dont NEED to rev it past 4000k, if its supposed to go further then something is obviously wrong and it would be nice to know if something is up, and possibly affecting performance?

Will keep an eye on this to see if anyone can shed some light on the 4000k rev limiter!
